Support Conservation Funding in the Farm Bill!

Target: U.S. Senate, U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Environmental Defense Fund
The Senate passed its version of the Farm Bill in December, 2007, providing some important conservation funding increases.

The House and Senate now must reconcile the differences between the two versions of the bill and produce a final bill for the president to sign. It's critical for Congress to produce a final bill that includes $5.1 billion in additional conservation program funding - the level provided in the Senate bill - and makes some reasonable reforms to farm subsidy programs.

Tell your Representatives and Senators not to cut funding for USDA's voluntary conservation incentives programs and to take that message to Congressional and Agriculture Committee Leadership.

Dear Representative/Senator,

I urge you to ensure that members of the House-Senate conference committee currently working to finalize the farm bill do not cut new funding for USDA's voluntary conservation incentives programs below the $5.1 billion provided in the Senate version of the bill.

The Farm Bill is the single largest source of conservation funding in the U.S. The Farm Bill's conservation programs are critical to helping farmers and ranchers enhance wildlife habitat and improve water and air quality. Our farm policies should reward, rather than reject, landowners when they offer to help by enrolling in USDA's voluntary conservation programs. Currently, roughly two out of three farmers who apply are rejected from these programs due to lack of funds.

We signed the “Support Conservation Funding in the Farm Bill!” petition!

Watch the fertizler, pesticide and herbicide trucks pull up to commercial farms and you'll never eat from them again. They all have a big skull & crossbones on them - with good reason!

We need to start looking to more sustainable and ecologically friendly food production options. An average meal takes tens of thousands of miles for all of the ingredients to reach your dinner plate. Small scale farms help feed local populations in a more efficient way. They also are more likely farm sustainably, because they can't afford to do otherwise. they have the ability to focus more on ecological integrity as they maintain a smaller more industrial farm. Smaller farms also help keep local economies more healthy and more stable. The food from these farms is more nutritious and delicious as well. Food that is picked early never has the full nutritional potential, nor the full flavor.

Anyone who has eaten organic food would know immediately the difference in taste and nutrition. I believe it is imperative to further funding for such programs that include organic farming if we want to obtain good health for us and the environment. Thank you for your consideration of keeping the importance of organic farming on your mind when you cast your vote on this important legislation.

We are all going green to make this earth a better place for all. Helping each other is key -- enrolling in USDA's voluntary conservation programs is so very vital that making cuts in funding would undermine our determination as a people in making this a healthier earth. Enhancing wildlife habitats, improving water and air quality are examples of what would be lost if this important funding were to be cut. Please support these critical conservation priorities and make farmland stewardship the centerpiece of the 2008 Farm Bill.

Conservation programs, a return to the sustaineable and organic frming and the serach for alternative farming methods (e.g., skyfarming) are some of the possible solution to the present ever growing crisis that we are experiencing in the destruction of our planet and its inhabitants.
