Help Prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome!

Target: US Congress
Sponsored by: American Humane Association
Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is a form of child abuse that results from violently shaking an infant or from abusive impact to an infant's head. Between 1,200 and 1,600 of the nation's children suffer from SBS each year.
Congressional findings estimate that between one-quarter and one-third of SBS victims die as a result of their injuries, while one-third suffer permanent and severe disabilities, including traumatic brain injury, paralysis, seizures and loss of hearing or vision.

To protect the nation's most vulnerable citizens from such tragic and preventable maltreatment, the U.S. Congress has introduced the Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Act of 2007 (S. 1204 and H.R. 2052).

The bill enables the Secretary of Health and Human Services to develop a national public health campaign that would inform the general public, new parents, child care providers, health care providers and social workers about the risks and dangers associated with SBS.

Tell your Representatives and Senators to pass the Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Act!
deadline: 8-16-2008

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and a supporter of the American Humane Association, I urge you to support the Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Act of 2007, H.R. 2052 and S. 1204.

Introduced by Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY) and Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT), the bill enables the Secretary of Health and Human Services to develop a national public health campaign on Shaken Baby Syndrome prevention. By disseminating effective prevention practices and developing a national plan to increase awareness and provide immediate support for parents and other caregivers, this legislation is a proactive step toward addressing a rapidly increasing form of child abuse.

For the health and welfare of the nation's infants and their caregivers, please support this important initiative.

[Your Comment]

Please support this bill and help protect the nation's infants from Shaken Baby Syndrome. I look forward to seeing what action you take regarding this important matter.

Sincerely,

Our nation's infants cannot protect themselves from Shaken Baby Syndrome so it is up to all elected officials and the public to do so.

As someone in the medical field, I have come across babies who have suffered needlessly with Shaken Baby Syndrome. In many cases, education and support for parents could've prevented a child's death. The more knowledge we give to parents, we encourage and enable them to make good decisions.

So many people don't even know this exists and feel that after their moment of frustration passes, that the child will be fine...only to find they have maimed/killed the child when they could have merely walked away....please help educate people on this---***all child abuse is preventable*** but this EVEN MORE SO!!!! Moments of frustration and anger pass---the after effects of SBS is FOREVER!!! Thank you!!

Well, I don't think it requires much education or intelligence to realize not to shake a baby...but since this is lacking, this bill needs to be passed and we need to take action to make sure folks are educated in this matter. This is one of the most preventable deaths I have ever heard and it can easily be prevented with education.

Every child deserves a lifetime of happiness. They also should feel safe in the arms of their parents, family, and caregivers. Those people who shake a baby should be held fully responsible for their actions and should be penalized fully. No one should have to suffer!

Children are not meant to be harmed. Kids will be kids. It seems like everyday there is a new case of child abuse on the news. Its too much already and something needs to be done. People who abuse kids need to get more then a bail and probation. They need to be in jail for life...they deserve to have their life taken away from them just like they took the childs life away.

A childs life is supposed to be a happy time. They are not supposed to be beaten and abused. I work with children everyday and i cant even begin to think what these people are thinking about when they shake or strike a child. Its ridiculous and something NEEDS to be done about it. CHILD ABUSE NEEDS TO BE STOPPED. Children are God's creations, their not meant to be a human punching bag.

Causing head trauma to an infant by shaking them is definitely a form of child abuse. Adults really should be accountable for doing this to a helpless child. Who else will protect these babies if Congress doesn't step in to pass the Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevdntion Act?
