Help Prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome!

Target: US Congress
Sponsored by: American Humane Association
Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is a form of child abuse that results from violently shaking an infant or from abusive impact to an infant's head. Between 1,200 and 1,600 of the nation's children suffer from SBS each year.
Congressional findings estimate that between one-quarter and one-third of SBS victims die as a result of their injuries, while one-third suffer permanent and severe disabilities, including traumatic brain injury, paralysis, seizures and loss of hearing or vision.

To protect the nation's most vulnerable citizens from such tragic and preventable maltreatment, the U.S. Congress has introduced the Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Act of 2007 (S. 1204 and H.R. 2052).

The bill enables the Secretary of Health and Human Services to develop a national public health campaign that would inform the general public, new parents, child care providers, health care providers and social workers about the risks and dangers associated with SBS.

Tell your Representatives and Senators to pass the Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Act!

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and a supporter of the American Humane Association, I urge you to support the Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Act of 2007, H.R. 2052 and S. 1204.

Introduced by Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY) and Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT), the bill enables the Secretary of Health and Human Services to develop a national public health campaign on Shaken Baby Syndrome prevention. By disseminating effective prevention practices and developing a national plan to increase awareness and provide immediate support for parents and other caregivers, this legislation is a proactive step toward addressing a rapidly increasing form of child abuse.

For the health and welfare of the nation's infants and their caregivers, please support this important initiative.

[Your Comment]

Please support this bill and help protect the nation's infants from Shaken Baby Syndrome. I look forward to seeing what action you take regarding this important matter.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

SBS is preventable, and tragic when that does not occur. It is time to act on behalf of children to reduce the harm from this leading form of physical abuse deaths.

Anyone who can harm a child, whether being 2 days old or 5 years old should be punished to the full extent of the law. It is our obligation and yours to protect our children! I believe that it should be a law that hospitals educate parents on this as well as it be required BY LAW for ANY caregiver to be SERIOUSLY educated on SBS!! I personally believe that anyone who abuses children should be charged with 1st degree murder and get one of two options: 1) life in prison without parole or 2)the death penalty. No child should be murdered because someone has had a bad day or life and decides that an innocent child that is crying should have to pay for their mistakes and failures!!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP US PROTECT OUR CHILDREN!!!

I think they should pass the act because in this year in time there are alot of young people having babies. There are alot more teen parents then there use to be and they are not aware of how easy it is for this to happen or they becomed stressed out and don't know how to cope or where to turn. This program would help this young adults know what to do or where to go.

I have a daughter and I can’t even imagine something like this happening to her! My child suffered from that and the guy who shaken my child only got 4yr in prison that’s not right. I want to raise awareness about shaken baby syndrome. Her father of Shaken Baby Syndrome killed my grand baby, Brianna at only 10 weeks old. Children are our future. To stop the senseless loss of a precious life, we need education and legal enforcement. I LOST MY GRANDBABY TWO MONTH AGO. Our son Nicholas was a victim of SBS at 6 months old. Because protects babies, babies can't talk and they need law's to protect them.

Our son Nicholas was a victim of SBS at 6 months old. He died at age 6 as a result of his injuries. Suffering for 5 1/2 years from the devasting trauma. Our family and our family's lives are forever changed by this horrific action by a daycare provider.
