Lift Women Out of Poverty with the GROWTH Act

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: CARE
Women in poor communities are more likely to spend their income on food, education and health care for their children -- activities that help lift families out of poverty. However, they often face unequal barriers to participating actively in their countries' economies.

That's where U.S. aid programs can play a role. The GROWTH Act will help women lift themselves and their communities out of poverty by providing:

  • Loans to help women start and grow their own businesses.
  • Skills training for women.
  • Information about their legal rights in the workplace.
  • Stronger women's land and property rights so that assets can be used as collateral.

Tell your legislators to make economic opportunities for poor women around the world a priority! Countless women are eager for access to better employment opportunities and improved working conditions.

Dear [Decision Maker]:

I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor The Global Resources and Opportunities for Women to Thrive Act - H.R.2965 in the House and S.2069 in the Senate.

Women in poor communities are more likely to spend their income on food, education and health care for their children -- activities that help lift families out of poverty. However, they often face unequal barriers to participating actively in their countries' economies.

U.S. international assistance and trade programs should prioritize economic opportunities for poor women around the world, and allocate resources to promote women's ability to start and grow their own businesses.

A woman in todays world is not able to have any other items than what they actually need to survive and then they are having to skim by. It is not fair to have to work 2 jobs to make ends meet and then not be able to raise a family without giving up time that should be spent with the kids. No wonder the kids today are getting in more trouble and do not have the guidance to live a normal life. How much worse does it need to get around this country before the government helps out their own people before helping out everyone else!!!

Poverty is a crime against humanity - an unnecessary and immoral crime given our global wealth. Consistently, it's been documented that money put in womens' hands best serves families and communities.

This is an incredibly sensible act. Given soaring population, the global food crisis, and global environmental change, this is one inexpensive way to help the world survive the coming century. Let's Do This! Let's empower women to help save their families, communities, and their world.

Whether you are my Senator or my Representative in the House, I urge you to co-sponsor H.R.2965. It will do tremendous good here at home and all over the world. Under-privileged women need only a chance to begin. This "Global Resources and Opportunities for Women to Thrive Act" seems like just the opportunity that is needed world-wide.

I agree that we should start at home, but making women more self-sufficient will reduce the possibilities of battered women who feel they have no way out for lack of skills or confidence. Let's begin a proactive, rather than a reactive, legislation.

This is the kind of antipoverty program that gives us the most bang for our bucks. Give the poor hope and there will be less violence, and we can spend less on weapons
