Start Early: Take a Stand on Pre-K

Target: 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: Pre-K Now
Access to high-quality pre-k shouldn't be about where a child lives or luck or family income. The proven and lasting benefits of quality pre-k should be available to all who want it.

Pre-k can raise academic achievement and graduation rates, reduce grade repetition and special education needs, and teach invaluable social skills and teamwork.

The presidential candidates must show leadership on this issue now by making pre-k a campaign priority. Ask the candidates what they will do to help all children start school ready to succeed.
deadline: Ongoing...

Dear Presidential Candidate,

As a voter in this year's primary and general elections, I'm writing to urge you to make federal support for state pre-kindergarten programs an important part of your platform and a top priority if you are elected.

Access to high-quality pre-k shouldn't be about where a child lives or luck or family income. The proven and lasting benefits of quality pre-k should be available to all who want it. Pre-k raises academic achievement and graduation rates, reduces grade repetition and special education needs, and teaches invaluable social skills and teamwork.

Our government needs to support education rather than just using it in their speeches to get elected.

The key to success as a country is education. We need to get our priorities straight. Start putting our children first & focus less on money, greed, fame, etc.!

I tried very hard to get my son into the Pre-K class at our local Elementary school and was told that he can only go there if English is his second language. When I asked further, I was told that only Spanish speaking kids get to go. So, I pay the taxes and my kid gets left out. What is wrong with this picture? Make sure that kids of citizens that contribute to the community get to go and not just "Spanish" speaking kids. Why are lawful citizens punished, while illegals get free healthcare and every other help?

Everyone deserves to be educated. By offering this program to kids and their families kids can get a head start in being educated earlier. Usually when people are young they learn fast.

It has been proven that a child learns the most during the first three years of their lives.....why should education always come down to the dollars?

It is very important to get our pre-k children ready for a strong eduaction. It gives them confidence earlier to attend full day kindergaten.

As a teacher, and a former nanny and personal care provider of children I know the benefits of early learning. Every child regardless of income or location of family shoul be allowed/required to attend pre-k. Those children with special needs should also be provided educational services at early ages at no charge. This is what all tax payers pay for, even if we do not have children in school. Children are sponges for learning within the first few years, and we as a nation need to take avantage of this. It is a shame that I get students on the college level who can not read, perform basic math, or write. We need to start out with our young children so that they can shine as the continue through the school system and become our nation's future.

Our once-thriving state pre-k program here in Ohio was decimated by years of neglect and short-sighted leadership. Fortunately, our new governor and legislative leaders have recognized pre-k as an urgent priority and worked together to increase funding last year. Still, we lag behind most states in terms of access to state pre-k and need to improve our standards of quality. Presidential action could do much to accelerate Ohio's progress and efforts in many other states. Please make federal support for high-quality, voluntary pre-k a major focus of your campaign and, if elected, your administration.
