Target:2008 Presidential Candidates Sponsored by:Pre-K Now
Access to high-quality pre-k shouldn't be about where a child lives or luck or family income. The proven and lasting benefits of quality pre-k should be available to all who want it.
Pre-k can raise academic achievement and graduation rates, reduce grade repetition and special education needs, and teach invaluable social skills and teamwork.
The presidential candidates must show leadership on this issue now by making pre-k a campaign priority. Ask the candidates what they will do to help all children start school ready to succeed.
We signed the “Start Early: Take a Stand on Pre-K” petition!

The foundation of a highly-functioning society is through unfettered access to unbiased, objective education and health care. It has been shown (by Dr. Boris Sidis) that very young children can and perhaps, SHOULD start to learn certain fundamentals like spelling, reading, logic, mathematics, second languages, socialization etc... This should be the responsibility of our governement if we want to cultivate and perpetuate a society where we are happy, healthy and productive. If we don't start with radical education and healthcare reform, then we are simply shingling the roofs of our Potemkin village.

As a teacher of a Junior Kindergarten program I believe early academic interventions are most beneficial to the students future success in school. I see proof daily of how many of my students would have been retained in regular kindergarten classrooms this year. I believe I have given them a wonderful start to their academic career.

Pre-K education sets the foundation for our children. If the foundation is set with unregulated, low-quality care we are setting those children up for an upward battle of achieving success. However, if we invest in these children and help them to create a solid foundation, they will have the tools needed to build on this foundation and achieve the success they deserve. How can we compromise on the quality of early care for children when they truly are our future? We will either pay now and see a wonderful return, or pay later and see some of these children go down a very unhealthy unproductive road. You have the ability to make the choice and make a difference!

In San Francisco, my daughter was instrumental in establishing a fine program of child care and pre-K education for the working poor. Transferred to New York City, to replicate her work, she has been bucking all kinds of blocs, from indifference to political corruption. If you saw what her efforts had effected in California, I think you would be moved enough to support similar programs here and throughout the country - and not only for the poor who can work. Concern for the care and education of children will certainly influence the way I vote.

My nephew's mother cannot afford child care and has pulled her 5 year old out of child care. I am truly saddened by this because he is so eager to learn. His birthday is Sept 8 so he just missed the cutoff to start public school. He will be six in Sept and still not in any form of school. When he was in child care his flurished and loved learning. I feel so bad for him at this time, to be so smart and deprived of the tools needed to grow and learn. His mom is unable to provide much of anything for her two boys, so to pay anything for child care is out of the question.

Think of the children. All children need an education and it seems like it is getting harder for people to find an education. It needs to start somewhere. Please help so they too can get an education.

As an early childhood educator and owner of a preschool and child care center I am urging you to invest in this nations very young children - our future. Substantiated research has proven that quality care and education at a young age has lasting effects on children and their future success-especially those children living in poverty. Please help to raise the academic achievement rate for these children.

My Child Care Center and many like it in Wisconsin are doing it's best to provide highly educated teachers for our 4-K students. Unfortunately the pay does not reflect the importance of this job or any job in child care. This must change in order to insure the highest quality of care we can provide. Please help me keep high quality professionals by being able to pay them more. It has been proven, investment in early education pays in academic benefits in the long run.
Thank You
Joan Beck

Please support quality early childhood education and the programs that provide it. Access to high-qualtiy programs shouldn't be about luck or family income. All of America's children deserve a high-quality early childhood experience. Please make federal funding of quality programs a priority-for our children!
