End China's Human Rights Abuses in Tibet Before the 2008 Olympics

Target: Jacques Rogge, International Olympic Committee President
Sponsored by: Care2.com
Although China is known around the world for violating human rights in Tibet, the International Olympic Committee chose Beijing as the site for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Tens of thousands of Tibetans have been forced to leave their homeland due to the brutal Chinese occupation.

China's current policy toward Tibet includes:
  • Imprisoning and torturing Tibetans who speak out against the Chinese occupation of Tibet;
  • Violating religious freedoms, including abducting one of Tibet's most important religious figures when he was only six years old. The boy has not been seen since 1995;
  • Failing to provide adequate education and health care to Tibetan children, and to eradicate child malnutrition and preventable illnesses; and
  • Enforcing laws that discriminate against Tibetan identity, culture, and religion.
China has a historic opportunity to change its treatment of Tibetans and show the world that it's worthy to host the 2008 Olympics by negotiating a peace agreement with Tibet's exiled leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Let China know that its successful Olympic bid does NOT mean the world sanctions its mistreatment of Tibetans! CALL ON CHINA TO END HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES IN TIBET.

Dear Mr. Rogge,

I am writing as someone who has been inspired both by the International Olympic Committee's dedication to the Olympic Truce and the Dalai Lama's peaceful efforts to find a negotiated solution for Tibet.

In light of the IOC's Olympic Truce commitment "to create a window of opportunities for dialogue, reconciliation and the resolution of conflicts...and to encourage political leaders to act in favour of peace" (www.olympic.org), it is clear that the IOC ideals and values are very applicable for Tibet as we approach the 2008 Games. The IOC has long contended that awarding Beijing the 2008 Games will improve human rights in China, but as time passes, these assurances have not turned into concrete results.

The IOC should not let the Olympics be used by China to blatantly or insidiously try to legitimize their rule in Tibet or to promote a distorted view of the conditions there. Yet with China's selection of the Tibetan antelope (or chiru) as an Olympic mascot, we are already seeing the first results of a Chinese strategy to misuse Tibet in relation to the 2008 Olympics.

[Your comment]

I ask that you use your good office to make real the lofty ideals of the Olympic Truce and hold Beijing to the same high standard. There is a real opportunity to promote the Olympics Truce with regards to Tibet and to improve the human rights situation there. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

I add my voice to the world's population to urge you to demand China begin honest, peaceful negotiations with Tibet. The Tibetan people must not be allowed to continue suffering under harsh Chinese rule. The allegations and the truth, which we've seen in video smuggled out of Tibet, must be addressed and corrected. I, as many, understand that people (world wide) are under similar circumstances and are no less deserving of freedom. However, the 2008 Summer Olympics scheduled to be held in Beijing are very political for the fact China assured the world in 2001 they would be upholding human rights guidelines and what we're seeing today, is NOT acceptable! Forced sterilisations, arrest, and even death are a far cry from even the basic human rights! What we're seeing is genocide. Sir, I implore you to take firm, positive action to find a resolution to the crisis in Tibet and show the world our respect and trust are truly accepted and respected. Together, we CAN do this! My sincere gratitude and prayers for a FAIR outcome. Thank you!..............................................................You know there really is still a chance for peace and that chance will definitely increase if we each do our piece. So let’s make peace -- in our homes, in our own hearts, in our relationships, in our communities, in all of our dealings and in the world. Peace be with us all.

I have watched every single olympics since I was five years old, and have continued to watch them with my daughter but I will not watch or support the olympics in Beijing. We cannot hide behind a slogan supporting the ideal for athletes and at the same time turn our backs on the human rights violations being committed by the latest Olympic host. The Olympics are about bringing mankind together through an open platform of the athletic stage. The Olympics are designed to cross all boundaries, gender and race and nationality. We must not forget that all the athletes are human beings first, athletes second. To tout the olympic charge in the face of the atrocities that China continues to commit everyday, even against its own people is to deny that charge. To support the Olympics in Beijing is to support "Hitler-esque" activity of that government and to deny the very human-ness of the athletes that the Olympics seeks to put first. We should not support China as an Olympic host quite simply because if we care at all about the Olympic mandate we cannot.

Mr.Rogge, I am angry that you as president of this prestigous time-honoured institution would disgrace the Olympics and all that it stands for by hosting them in a country that has such a murderous, sociopathic governemnt. By doing this, you are dipping your hands in the blood of all the Tibetans, free thinkers and dissenters murdered by these Maoists. How much money are you making from this deal??? Maybe it's Time for a new yacht or Cadilac??? You have ruined the Olympics and should be ashamed of yourself. I can't save all the victims in the Chinese gulag, but, as a citizen of the Free World, I can say this to you! And I'm DAMNED PROUD that I did!!!!! Have a wonderful time with your friends in Beijing!!!!

It is shameful that the Olympics are taking place in, a thus endorsing, such a totalitarian country. China disregards human rights and is the world leader by a wide margin in employing the death penalty. This is yet another blow to the already battered reputation of the Olympic games.

China is a known human-rights abuser violator-- we should boycott the games to protest their treatment of their own citizens and those of Tibet.

I do not support cultural genocide. The Chinese have politicized the Olympics, going against the "Olympic Spirit". I endorse a complete boycott of the Beijing Olympics by my country (USA) in view of the egregious and barbaric behavior of the Chinese government towards the Tibetan people. I will not view or participate in any Olympic activity related to this Olympics. The cowardice of the IOC is appalling as well.

P.S. This protest is also on behalf of the dissidents within China who have been persecuted unfairly, not only in the past, but also in the present (most recently a prominent activist, Hu Jia)!
