End China's Human Rights Abuses in Tibet Before the 2008 Olympics

Target: Jacques Rogge, International Olympic Committee President
Sponsored by: Care2.com
Although China is known around the world for violating human rights in Tibet, the International Olympic Committee chose Beijing as the site for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Tens of thousands of Tibetans have been forced to leave their homeland due to the brutal Chinese occupation.

China's current policy toward Tibet includes:
  • Imprisoning and torturing Tibetans who speak out against the Chinese occupation of Tibet;
  • Violating religious freedoms, including abducting one of Tibet's most important religious figures when he was only six years old. The boy has not been seen since 1995;
  • Failing to provide adequate education and health care to Tibetan children, and to eradicate child malnutrition and preventable illnesses; and
  • Enforcing laws that discriminate against Tibetan identity, culture, and religion.
China has a historic opportunity to change its treatment of Tibetans and show the world that it's worthy to host the 2008 Olympics by negotiating a peace agreement with Tibet's exiled leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Let China know that its successful Olympic bid does NOT mean the world sanctions its mistreatment of Tibetans! CALL ON CHINA TO END HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES IN TIBET.

Dear Mr. Rogge,

I am writing as someone who has been inspired both by the International Olympic Committee's dedication to the Olympic Truce and the Dalai Lama's peaceful efforts to find a negotiated solution for Tibet.

In light of the IOC's Olympic Truce commitment "to create a window of opportunities for dialogue, reconciliation and the resolution of conflicts...and to encourage political leaders to act in favour of peace" (www.olympic.org), it is clear that the IOC ideals and values are very applicable for Tibet as we approach the 2008 Games. The IOC has long contended that awarding Beijing the 2008 Games will improve human rights in China, but as time passes, these assurances have not turned into concrete results.

The IOC should not let the Olympics be used by China to blatantly or insidiously try to legitimize their rule in Tibet or to promote a distorted view of the conditions there. Yet with China's selection of the Tibetan antelope (or chiru) as an Olympic mascot, we are already seeing the first results of a Chinese strategy to misuse Tibet in relation to the 2008 Olympics.

[Your comment]

I ask that you use your good office to make real the lofty ideals of the Olympic Truce and hold Beijing to the same high standard. There is a real opportunity to promote the Olympics Truce with regards to Tibet and to improve the human rights situation there. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

China has made a pledge to act with respect as the games draw near. The thugs that have protected the "Flame" has put a blight on the IOC. I wanted to watch the games with an open heart,but I am not going to watch and I am not buying any 2008 Olympic retail products.

To award this country with the Olympics is unbelievable. China needs to realize that they share this planet with people who do not agree with their methods of abduction, torture and I am sure murder. China needs to answer to the World about its human right violations! Boycott China!!!

The human rights abuses in Tibet must not be allowed to continue. I am calling for a boycott of the Olympic games as well as the boycott of all commercial sponsors that endorse the games. I call for a boycott of all Chinese goods and products. Finally, I call upon the International Olympic Committee to declare itself AGAINST the atrocities taking place in Tibet and to immediately suspend the Olympic games until such time as China removes itself from Tibet and apologizes to the world for its behavior.

Mr. Jacques Rogge, By participating in the Olympic games held in Beijing, China, we are inadvertently condoning their inhumane methods. It sends out a message that it is okay to treat people this way - "and it's NOT". We all talk about human rights causes and how to better the world - well, lets stop talking about it and take some action. For some reason, so many people ignore the facts, unless it affects them personally. Well, Mr. Rogge, it's unfortunate that it should take something personal to wake people up. Some people in China were forcibly evicted from their homes to make room for the Olympic games. And those same people, upon petitioning the forced eviction, were condemned of a crime (by petitioning), that several of them now sit in jail for years. Does that sound justified to you? How much more suffering do these people need to endure? It's not right or fair - China does not deserve either the media coverage or the participation of these Countries that we call 'civilized'. When did an Olympic event become more important than life itself?

All peoples everywhere(including the participants in the olympics) should boycott the olympics and any and everything that involves or has to do with China. What is wrong with the USA,President Bush,the people all across the gobe,and the people in the olympics!? I would hope and pray that China would do the right thing,but by every person who supports, participates,watches,travels to China,is sending the message that we do not care! I,and many like myself,DO CARE! If you let China get away with this,you will be helping them to annihilate an entire race of wonderful beings,rich in spiri,spiritual energy,and an absolutely wonderful history. I for one will NOT stand by and purchase or support ANYTHING from China. If we all do not help the Tibetan people,who will? If I could be in China to protest the olympics,I WOULD,and shame on the ones who set all of this up to be in china. Shame,shame,SHAME! None should watch,visit,nor participat in the olympics! Dear Mr. Jacques Rogge, STOP this now, PLEASE!! You are as much as saying that what China is doing is okay! We ,all people everywhere,should send them the message that this is inexcuseable!! Please look into your heart and especially the hearts of a kind loving race of people who are being visciously annhilated by China. Stop,before it is too late,PLEASE Namaste

It sickens and saddens me that we can ignore human sufferring on such a massive scale merely to hold a sports event. We need to prioritise and for all those who believe that the Olympics are an international heritage, what about the Tibetan heritage?!

It was a disgrace when China got the Olympics years ago. But we hoped it would have improved as a result. It has not. From Tibet to Darfur China remains the number one violator of human rights. It is also the world's worst polluter, and its record on humane treatment of animals is as bad as its record with people. The bloody products of the infamous Canadian baby seal slaughter, ongoing now, can be sold in only a very few places on Earth--one of those is China. The Olympics disgraces itself by holding them in China. Not since the Nazi Olympics of 1936 has an Olympics been so despoiled. I will not even watch it.

It's a shame that an event such as the Olympics, which should bring the world together in peace and unity, will have such a dark cloud hanging over it because of the choice to hold the games in China. Unfortunately, the focus of the world will be diverted to the human rights abuses in Tibet at a time when we should be focused on honoring the athletes who have all worked so hard to be there.

In this day and age of war and oppression, the main weapon we need to end all the chaos is LOVE. Like charity, it begins at home.

The world leaders should be ashamed that they aren't doing more to ease the situation in Tibet. It is immoral and shameful that these peaceful people have had their culture attacked for no reason for over fifty years and the world just stands by and does nothing. Do not buy Chinese products please.

With all the democratic countries in the world,why does the Olympics have to be hosted in a repressive dictatorship? What the Chinese are doing to the Tibetans is horrific. The one good thing to come of all this is now that everybody knows about their treatment,and the number taking a stand is amazing.

Dear Mr. Rogge, Sports games, the Olympic games especially, should be there to stand together. Yet, is it really standing together by watching how the communist chinese government is treating the peaceful population of Tibet? By tolerating such deeds out of fear before the chinese communist party, you tolerate the elimination of an entire nation. Now you have the chance to speak up. Now you have the chance to boycott the games and put pressure on the chinese government to let go of a nation (Tibet) which they have oppressed now since much too long. Tibet is not China, but Tibet is and will stay Tibet.
