End China's Human Rights Abuses in Tibet Before the 2008 Olympics

Target: Jacques Rogge, International Olympic Committee President
Sponsored by: Care2.com
Although China is known around the world for violating human rights in Tibet, the International Olympic Committee chose Beijing as the site for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Tens of thousands of Tibetans have been forced to leave their homeland due to the brutal Chinese occupation.

China's current policy toward Tibet includes:
  • Imprisoning and torturing Tibetans who speak out against the Chinese occupation of Tibet;
  • Violating religious freedoms, including abducting one of Tibet's most important religious figures when he was only six years old. The boy has not been seen since 1995;
  • Failing to provide adequate education and health care to Tibetan children, and to eradicate child malnutrition and preventable illnesses; and
  • Enforcing laws that discriminate against Tibetan identity, culture, and religion.
China has a historic opportunity to change its treatment of Tibetans and show the world that it's worthy to host the 2008 Olympics by negotiating a peace agreement with Tibet's exiled leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Let China know that its successful Olympic bid does NOT mean the world sanctions its mistreatment of Tibetans! CALL ON CHINA TO END HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES IN TIBET.

Dear Mr. Rogge,

I am writing as someone who has been inspired both by the International Olympic Committee's dedication to the Olympic Truce and the Dalai Lama's peaceful efforts to find a negotiated solution for Tibet.

In light of the IOC's Olympic Truce commitment "to create a window of opportunities for dialogue, reconciliation and the resolution of conflicts...and to encourage political leaders to act in favour of peace" (www.olympic.org), it is clear that the IOC ideals and values are very applicable for Tibet as we approach the 2008 Games. The IOC has long contended that awarding Beijing the 2008 Games will improve human rights in China, but as time passes, these assurances have not turned into concrete results.

The IOC should not let the Olympics be used by China to blatantly or insidiously try to legitimize their rule in Tibet or to promote a distorted view of the conditions there. Yet with China's selection of the Tibetan antelope (or chiru) as an Olympic mascot, we are already seeing the first results of a Chinese strategy to misuse Tibet in relation to the 2008 Olympics.

[Your comment]

I ask that you use your good office to make real the lofty ideals of the Olympic Truce and hold Beijing to the same high standard. There is a real opportunity to promote the Olympics Truce with regards to Tibet and to improve the human rights situation there. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

We are not innocent ourselves when we decide to buy, to watch, to accept what is unacceptable. We should look ourselves in a mirror and change our way of living, eating, buying... "My people are dying for lack of knowledge" and we won't find it at Mc Do, nor in our new chinese mobile phone. I use this Yahoo email address in purpose, yahoo should be ashame of its behaviour helping the chinese authorities arresting chinese people who talk too much via Internet

I have witnessed at first hand the consequences of torture and denial of basic human rights. I came out of s21 concentration camp and the Killing Fields in Cambodia with the feeling that these horrors are happening still, in Sudan, in Tibet and in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have an obligation to humanity, to ourselves to speak out and not let atrocities just continue to happen

It's not a good idea. And China doesn't have my respect for it's treatment of Tibetans, women, girl children or endangered animals, etc.

China's crackdown of Tibet had been such an appalling event that gathers the concern from all over the world. However, I would like to make a reminder that while people are sympathetic to the Tibetans, and condemning the savage act of Chinese government, a lot of Chinese people begin to feel sorry for themselves, feeling as if the world has turned their back on them. As an advocate for Tibetan human right, I would like to call people's attention to examine what are the best alternatives to help the Chinese understand the meaning of human right with patience and compassion. While condemnation simply aroused their dissatisfaction for the world, and bring back their memory of being occupied by the western countries (including Japan of course) at the beginning of twentieth century. So, now that China feel like they want to share their growth with the rest of the world through Olympic (they really try hard), though ignorant of concept such as respect and humanity, and never had much exposure to ideologies such as democracy and freedom, were being reproached for the very "normal" thing they do everyday. Not only are they clueless of how to respond appropriately, they're just going to feel angry and humiliated. Their patriotic feelings did not happen without reasons, especially when none of the western protesters' concern was being explained to them without being tainted with prejudice, ex. Chinese journalists described the protesters as being arranged under conspiracy of CIA. Though ridiculous as it is, their responses remind me of what Jesus taught the world, only those who had never sinned can throw the rock at the sinner. If the western countries (including Japan) had never taken advantage of China, instead, take the patience to educate them as equals, about concept of democracy and humanity, will they become so bitter and hurt others as the way they were being hurt? If they were never being exposed to Marxism or capitalism, will they become complete materialist that enforces this concept of "modernization" to the beautiful Tibet, and completely ignores the teaching of Chinese saints? Of course we can say that it was the fault of our ancestors... but we can not bypass the karmic effect of what had been done, we can only try to make things right at the present moment. China had suffered before, though I definetely think they're doing the wrong thing to the Tibetans,I hope boycotting them will make them realize what they had done wrong and be willing to change, but on the other hand, it might not teach them anything or help them to change their behaviors. They're bitter, and need to be educated in a caring and consistent manner, like children that need to be educated. If westerners can take the patience to teach the Chinese children or engage in community service that spread the concept of humanity, ie. through more offcial exchange programs or more comprehensive plans given by government officals. Then, hopefully one day China will be reformed from the bottom up. If people feel that they can be friends with the rest of the world, maybe they won't feel so dependent on their government and be willing to make their country a truly likable place. These are the thoughts I came up with after reading some of their feedback from the Chinese news network.

China should not be allowed the privilege of hosting the Olympic Games when China's government commits such atrocities!
