End China's Human Rights Abuses in Tibet Before the 2008 Olympics

Target: Jacques Rogge, International Olympic Committee President
Sponsored by: Care2.com
Although China is known around the world for violating human rights in Tibet, the International Olympic Committee chose Beijing as the site for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Tens of thousands of Tibetans have been forced to leave their homeland due to the brutal Chinese occupation.

China's current policy toward Tibet includes:
  • Imprisoning and torturing Tibetans who speak out against the Chinese occupation of Tibet;
  • Violating religious freedoms, including abducting one of Tibet's most important religious figures when he was only six years old. The boy has not been seen since 1995;
  • Failing to provide adequate education and health care to Tibetan children, and to eradicate child malnutrition and preventable illnesses; and
  • Enforcing laws that discriminate against Tibetan identity, culture, and religion.
China has a historic opportunity to change its treatment of Tibetans and show the world that it's worthy to host the 2008 Olympics by negotiating a peace agreement with Tibet's exiled leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Let China know that its successful Olympic bid does NOT mean the world sanctions its mistreatment of Tibetans! CALL ON CHINA TO END HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES IN TIBET.

Dear Mr. Rogge,

I am writing as someone who has been inspired both by the International Olympic Committee's dedication to the Olympic Truce and the Dalai Lama's peaceful efforts to find a negotiated solution for Tibet.

In light of the IOC's Olympic Truce commitment "to create a window of opportunities for dialogue, reconciliation and the resolution of conflicts...and to encourage political leaders to act in favour of peace" (www.olympic.org), it is clear that the IOC ideals and values are very applicable for Tibet as we approach the 2008 Games. The IOC has long contended that awarding Beijing the 2008 Games will improve human rights in China, but as time passes, these assurances have not turned into concrete results.

The IOC should not let the Olympics be used by China to blatantly or insidiously try to legitimize their rule in Tibet or to promote a distorted view of the conditions there. Yet with China's selection of the Tibetan antelope (or chiru) as an Olympic mascot, we are already seeing the first results of a Chinese strategy to misuse Tibet in relation to the 2008 Olympics.

[Your comment]

I ask that you use your good office to make real the lofty ideals of the Olympic Truce and hold Beijing to the same high standard. There is a real opportunity to promote the Olympics Truce with regards to Tibet and to improve the human rights situation there. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Please tell China that their behavior in Tibet was and is reprehensible. The world has not forgotten. Tourism for the Olympics will be much less than it might have been because of it.

Mr. Rogge, your committee is a disgrace, voting to have China have the 2008 Summer Olympics! China has forced abortion and sterilization, and also takes away the rights of people! Please do not have the Olympics there - please repent before it is too late!

This is the year 2007. I can't believe that people are still being so persecuted for their religious beliefs, heritage, and culture. The olympics should be held in countries where they uphold human and animal rights. Until China does this, they should not be allowed to hold the olympic games.

If China wishes to show the world that they have become a "modernized" nation, then they need to treat all of their citizens humanely. Hosting the Olympics will not earn them respect on a global scale; changing their policy on Tibet will.

How is it that you are willing to hold the Olympics, which began at the very beginning of democracy in Greece, in a totalitatian, communist, imperialistic power, who annexed Tibet and call it their own! I will boycott watching the Olympics for the first time in my life because you give them status of a democracy! I will invite my friends and family to also boycott them!

I would hope that the international community might have even more conscience than any American community right now...just by virtue of what else is going on out there on the planet. We can't seem to put the reins on a rogue president who never should have been in office in the first place, to me...it might be a real stretch to think we (Americans) could do something about the inhumane acts of the chinese government. Hard to believe with Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo hanging over our heads. Nonetheless, people of conscience must group together and keep on trying. Maybe if we can get our butts out of Iraq, then we can get China out of Tibet...you think? Both things would be very nice for all us humanitarian thinkers. I am trying not to hold my breath, but one can only hope. Please help free Tibetans...and hopefully Iraq also (as well as any oppressed people or country on this planet). Vote anti-Bush!

Dear Mr. Rogge, although The Olympics is never meant to be political, how can we ignore the elephant in the livingroom? China has violently aggressed against Tibet since the late 50's and continues to do so. I'm saddened that this country won the bid for the Olympics and that the almighty Dollar/Yuan is all that seems to matter in the world. I will not be attending the games nor will I even watch them. Not unless TIBET IS FREED. (P.S., The USA needs to get a clue about human rights).
