Limit Patients' Access to Health Care? Help Stop Cuts to Medicare!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: American Medical Association Patients' Action Netw
The future for patients’ access to health care is bleak.

While millions of baby boomers are about to retire and swell Medicare’s ranks, the government is cutting patients access to Medicare. It makes no sense. You have spent years paying taxes and paying into social security. Now insurance companies want to cut your benefits to line their own pockets.

Past Medicare cuts have made it more difficult for patients to find a doctor. Future doctor payment cuts will force doctors to limit the number of new Medicare patients they treat, will make it more difficult to find surgical and medical specialists and will force seniors to travel greater distances for medical care.

Now is your chance to protect yourself and your family — the future of your health is in your hands.

Tell Washington bigwigs to stop playing politics with your health care. Sign the petition to Congress today!

Success! With bi-partisan majorities in both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate, Congress over-turned the president’s veto of Medicare doctor payment cuts on July 15, 2008.

Please don't stop here. Click for more opportunities to make a difference.

Dear [Decision maker],

I strongly urge you to stop Medicare pay cuts.

Medicare doesn't even reimburse doctors at a level equal to the cost of treating patients. And, recent reports predict that the government will cut the rates further - by 10 percent in 2008, and a whopping 40 percent by 2015!

Past cuts have made it more difficult for patients to find a doctor. Future doctor payment cuts will force doctors to limit the number of new Medicare patients they treat, will make it more difficult to find surgical and medical specialists and will force seniors to travel greater distances for medical care.

With millions of Baby Boomers about to retire and swell Medicare's ranks, these cuts make no sense. Americans have spent years paying taxes and paying into Social Security. We refuse to let insurance companies cut our benefits to line their own pockets.

If you don't act now, doctor payment cuts will jeopardize Americans' access to doctors. Please make good on your promise to America's families by stopping Medicare pay cuts.

There is already a shortage of geriatric specialists. Cuts to Medicare will make the situation worse, while our population is aging.

I realize that this is of no concern to any of you in office, or your families as you will always be very well taken care of. If you have not realized, this is NOT the case for many, many, of us who have paid the taxes you benefit greatly from and waste in other countries. I am certain you are not aware, nor wish to be, of the suffering due to lack of any quality (some instances none at all) of medical care. Do you not realize there are many of us having to choose to have basic utilities OR medical care. How healthy is it when one has to let their water, electricity (total electric home), phone, mortage payment, home insurance, property taxes all go unpaid. I am sure you do not know of any of these people as you stay so sheltered in your "ivory towers". I would be shocked if you could even answer what the cost of one office visit is, one tube of toothpaste, whithout counsulting another source. You all need to live like the rest of us. It amazes me how quickly you can accumulate millions of dollars to run for a "public servant" (gag on that one) position when many of us cannot even come up with enough money to get through the month, especially on any kind of disability. This is just one more disgrace to this country as if we have not acquired enough over the last 2 presidential terms.

As baby boomers are approaching retirement they are counting on what was promised 50+ years ago. Work hard, save and pay your taxes, you will in turn be provided the basics of healthcare "medicare". It is a disgrace that the aging population has less options due to cuts in the healthcare system. Fewer doctors are able to take on these patients. When one finds a doctor they very often need to travel over 20 miles, which also takes them out of the comforts of the medical system they once new. Patients who need to be hospitalized are far from family members/caregivers who could make an impact on a patients ability to recover at a faster rate or at teh very least have there caregivers close to them without the burdon of traveling a great distance. We have forgotten about people and have replaced our society and patient care with dollars and cents. Lets get back to true quality of care, neighborhood hospitals(reasonable distance)and physicans that do not have to cap patients due to medical status (insurance policies).

As it is now payments from Medicare and Medicaid are so low doctors are refusing to see patients with this coverage. Cutting the amount more will send more doctors away from this program and make it impossible for these people to have the care they need. HOW dare congress do this to the people of the U.S. when they have perks that are uncalled for. Health care is necessary.
