Climate Change: It's Time for Congress to Act

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Environmental Defense
Governors all over the country are taking the lead in capping greenhouse gas emissions to stop global warming.

Now, it's Congress' turn.

The year is almost over, and Congress has not yet taken action on global warming, let alone scheduled a vote.

Tell Congress that you want them to cap global warming emissions in order to cut CO2 pollution by 80% by 2050.
deadline: Ongoing...
goal: 10,000

Dear [Senator Harry Reid, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Your Congressperson, Your Senators],

Global warming is the most serious environmental threat facing the planet today. Yet, with just weeks left in the legislative calendar this year, Congress has not yet scheduled a vote to cap and reduce America's global warming pollution.

Even as Congress continues to work towards final passage of energy legislation containing a "down payment" on global warming, Congress must also move forward with legislation to cut emissions of global warming pollutants.

As a concerned citizen, I urge you to do everything in your power to get a bill to the floor in both the Senate and the House this year that meets these four criteria:

- Set a hard cap on global warming pollution and a concrete timetable for reduction;

- Ensure all forms of global warming pollution are covered;

- Set new standards for environmentally sound ethanol and other biofuels; and

- Foster real market competition for next generation energy sources

With only weeks left in the legislative calendar, there is no time to lose. You may not have time to pass a law this year, but you must do more to mark up legislation and prepare for floor action.

We must get global warming policy right and we must do it now.

We need more stringent energy efficiency standards before there is no way to lessen the impact of global climate change.

Isn't it time to stop fooling around with this legislation to stop global warming? Global warming is increasing at an alarming rate. So get with it, Congress! I want my nieces to be able to enjoy outdoor activities w/their children. When I was little my mom took us to the beach every weekend and we'd spend the whole day. Try doing that today without getting burnt to a crisp. It's already started so PLEASE lets stop it before it's too late and the too late part is not far off. If you have children, how can you look at them knowing u could save their future and do nothing. Please make the RIGHT CHANGES!!! Dear Congress, Be active. What will the history books write about the current congress? As leaders, who took huge steps to dealing with this global problem? Or as the people who stood back dispite scientific evidence and public backing and did nothing??? 40 years have been wasted that we could have been working on climate change except for the debunkers delaying the message to the people. Represent your constituents and the Planet. The people are demanding and you are ignoring us! Wake the *bleep* up! No more phony studies! No more stalling, no more killing of every last living creature including US! well what about it do the job you elected to to do instead of sitting on your butts doing nothing >>>> remember what effect us and our kids also effect you and your kids its to put up and shutup and stop acting like a bunch of blood sucking money grubbing leeches and protect our environment .... you sorry politicians not only are you allowing our mother planet earth to be destroy by being stupid and blinded by greed and selfishness and thinking only of yourself, why in the world would want to do right thing and stop global warming if theres nothing in for you, well let me remind you once again,what effect us the people who put your butts in office will also effect you and your families you can keep on denying theres problem and keep saying global warming doesn't exist when it definitely does everybody is wrong(scientist for example even say global warming does infact----- exist, but you jug heads say it doesn't cause all your looking at whats in for you and how much there to be made/or lose. election coming back up again and i am register voter, do your job or get out and let someone who cares about the people and the environment take over and do what you politicians are to greedy to do. its time to take action now get with it and do the job or get out, put up or shut up..................

We are way over due to put money and energy into other resources to stop pollution and dependence on oil. We should be offering tax breaks to companies that make changes and encourage them to continue and make an example for others to follow.

Congress must take a stand to protect the future of the world. More important is what you will do on behalf of U.S. citizens. Please take a stand for the protection of yourselves,family and neighbors. The seaons are drastically changing every year because of the irresponsibility of its inhabitants. Lets make sure that there will be an earth to sustain its life.

I can't stand seeing so much going on, and so little people with so much power doing anything about it. Congress has an immense amount of influence over more enviornmental organizations and just organizations in general. Why is it that they can't do something as simple as passing a law for reduction in pollution? It would save both human and animal lives, and global warming wouldn't destroy the Earth. CONGRESS NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!

Sue the automotive industry for selling dirty cars that pollute.I read an article on the news thta said when katrina hit it killed 38 million trees. This could be another reason for global warming we must plant more trees between that and deforestation we are destroying earth.I want animals to be saved and all human life is this too much to ask for?We MUST RUN RENEWBLE ENERGY FUTURE TO HELP SAVE THE PLANET.

I would like to see strict gas emissions and funding for economic incentives to use alternative means. Some scientific funding would be best also.

I wrote a poem about this... and it's called We've done Nothing. E-mail me if you want it. It's really good, and it repersents what we're doing, and what the animals have done... It's painful, but true. Just as life is.
