Climate Change: It's Time for Congress to Act

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Environmental Defense
Governors all over the country are taking the lead in capping greenhouse gas emissions to stop global warming.

Now, it's Congress' turn.

The year is almost over, and Congress has not yet taken action on global warming, let alone scheduled a vote.

Tell Congress that you want them to cap global warming emissions in order to cut CO2 pollution by 80% by 2050.
deadline: 11-18-2008

Dear [Senator Harry Reid, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Your Congressperson, Your Senators],

Global warming is the most serious environmental threat facing the planet today. Yet, with just weeks left in the legislative calendar this year, Congress has not yet scheduled a vote to cap and reduce America's global warming pollution.

Even as Congress continues to work towards final passage of energy legislation containing a "down payment" on global warming, Congress must also move forward with legislation to cut emissions of global warming pollutants.

As a concerned citizen, I urge you to do everything in your power to get a bill to the floor in both the Senate and the House this year that meets these four criteria:

- Set a hard cap on global warming pollution and a concrete timetable for reduction;

- Ensure all forms of global warming pollution are covered;

- Set new standards for environmentally sound ethanol and other biofuels; and

- Foster real market competition for next generation energy sources

With only weeks left in the legislative calendar, there is no time to lose. You may not have time to pass a law this year, but you must do more to mark up legislation and prepare for floor action.

We must get global warming policy right and we must do it now.

If we can help reduce our carbon footprints, why don't we? Which is more important? for you and your kids to die from crazy weather, unclean air, and little land to live? Or a few bits of money to go to taxes? I believe that not only should US take part in this, but the entire world.

Lately this issue has been mentioned repetetively as it is will become more serious as time progresses if nothing is done about it. Global warming,is basically when the weather alters drastically. Global warming is caused by the emission of heat trapping gases produced by vehicles, power plants, industrial processes and deforestation. As these gases build up, they act like a big blanket, over heating the planet ,which is a huge threat to our health, economy and environment. If nothing is done about this issue our future generations will be affected. I signed this petition not because i am doing this for my own benefit, but for our children and family members who will eventually inherit a hotter world with dirtier air and water, and in cause of melting ice caps there will be more severe floods and droughts. We must all be involved in preventing an increase in global warming therefore congress should take action as well.

It is still time to act. The United States can become the leader in the fight against global warming. We can create a world environment organization thet can help to protect the environment through international cooperation projects and prevent a war that will sooner or later happen if nothing is done. We can build a future of hope and peace instead of despear , fear and destruction.

Congress - we need the US to show leadership on this matter - on aggressive global warming legistlation - just as the US has shown leadership in so many other matters over the years. Undeniably, the US has the strength, vision and means to set an example in global warming legislation. We need Congress to make ths real, to make it tangible and make change happen. I am a Canadian - not a citizen but a neighbour of yours - and I need you to set an example here. If the US can do this, so many other countries will follow suit. SHOW THE WORLD, CONGRESS !
