Don't Allow Global Warming Pollution to Increase for Decades

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Environmental Defense Fund
Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) proposed legislation that would postpone meaningful action on global warming pollution for at least twenty years.

The Voinovich bill is dressed up as a way to take action, but in fact is a detailed prescription for doing nothing.

The proposal would take away state authority to control global warming pollution, undermining efforts in dozens of states, including California, Florida and the Northeast members of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which have set ambitious emissions reduction targets. And this is just the beginning.

We need to do everything we can to defeat Senator Voinovich's sham proposal. Email your Senators today.

Dear Senator,

Senator George Voinovich recently proposed legislation that would allow global warming pollution to increase for decades. Even though the proposal is being pitched as a way to address global warming, its real impact would be to block serious global warming action this year.

I urge you to oppose the Voinovich proposal.

The proposal calls for weak, non-binding emissions reduction benchmarks - current levels in 2020 and 1990 levels in 2030 - while providing taxpayer-funded subsidies for favored technologies.

Postponing carbon reductions is a recipe for certain doom. Our government has already made this decision for the past 20 years. The time for debating and weak, non-binding emission reduction has ended. States --- and even cities -- recognize what many at the federal level seem out of touch with --- Global Warming --- Climate Change, so to speak -- is real... It is urgent, and we need to establish a government fleet of hybrid vehicles to show that our country means business. In addition to this very small effort, we need to reduce emissions by 80 percent --- TODAY --- not in twenty years by investing in renewable energy alternative Research and Development. Yet we have no National Energy Policy to guide these efforts... and the oil industry seems adept at keeping us stuck in an ever-ending denial and debate mode. Senator Voinovich's legislation is ludicrous! ... It is offensive to those scientists who deal with Climate Change issues .... and if allowed to play out to its ultimate conclusion, is criminal -- Many MORE lives -- in the U.S. and the world (those most vulnerable, the poor, the elderly and the children) will be lost as severe Climate Change events continue to ravage the land. Nature has a timetable -- The violent El Nino events, Katrina, the Cyclone in Burma, fires in the West, the drought in Australia.... all are warning signals. The time is almost over for clear and decisive action on the issue of Climate Change.

Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) should be thrown out of Congress for proposing a shameful bill that does absolutely nothing but undermine the States that do want to take action against global pollution.

In addition to promoting alternatives to petroleum-based energy, we can do a powerful thing right now: Go Vegan, Starting on Mondays (20% more heart attacks occur on Mondays!) We can reduce global warming, since meat is the no. 1 cause of global warming, improve our health and stop the torture of over 50 billion factory-farmed animals each year.
