Don't Allow Global Warming Pollution to Increase for Decades

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Environmental Defense Fund
Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) proposed legislation that would postpone meaningful action on global warming pollution for at least twenty years.

The Voinovich bill is dressed up as a way to take action, but in fact is a detailed prescription for doing nothing.

The proposal would take away state authority to control global warming pollution, undermining efforts in dozens of states, including California, Florida and the Northeast members of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which have set ambitious emissions reduction targets. And this is just the beginning.

We need to do everything we can to defeat Senator Voinovich's sham proposal. Email your Senators today.

Dear Senator,

Senator George Voinovich recently proposed legislation that would allow global warming pollution to increase for decades. Even though the proposal is being pitched as a way to address global warming, its real impact would be to block serious global warming action this year.

I urge you to oppose the Voinovich proposal.

The proposal calls for weak, non-binding emissions reduction benchmarks - current levels in 2020 and 1990 levels in 2030 - while providing taxpayer-funded subsidies for favored technologies.

We must get off coal, oil, and concomitant pollution. We need a Manhattan Project to develop alternative sources of energy! This should have been obvious during the 1973 oil embargo! Congress must begin to serve the public, not the coal and oil industries.

Why would we postpone helpful actions at all, when we can start to make a difference now? This is the most foolish and stubborn idea that has come up on this topic. Putting off a problem only makes it worse, it will not go away but we may lose our opportunity to make things better if we sit back and refuse to act at all.

We must address global warming now in a real way; the earth is not waiting for us to act. Every day that we delay impacts our ability to make a difference in the escalating temperature rise and the resulting weather extremes and ocean current changes. Among scientists the question isn't "whether our green-house emissions have affected our environment" the question is "can our negative impact be stopped and reversed?"

if Congress can not come up with real solutions, at the very least, STAY OUT OF THE WAY of our more progressive states!! Some of our far sighted governors are leading the way. We can all learn from them!

Considering the USA is currently the largest polluter in the world, you are very responsible for the changes we are seeing in the climate and in weather patterns. Take responsibility and take action, otherwise the USA will remain very hypocritcial when refering to the amount of pollution China and India will produce. Make an example to the rest of the world, other countries will follow in the USA's large shadow. The USA can produce alot more national electricity from renewables such as wind, and solar in the southern states. Efforts need to made now before these climatic changes move faster, at which point climate change will be out of our reach as a race.

States have the right to decide for themselves how much they want to regulate the air they breath. Some states have asthma rates that are soaring and they have the right to protect their own citizens. Do you represent the citizens or corporate welfare and big brother bullying?

We need immediate and coordinated action by government and business to stop global warming pollution create domestic clean energy sources. Senator Voinovich's bill is worse than no action. It creates a false sense of action and delays effective actions.
