Don't Allow Global Warming Pollution to Increase for Decades

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Environmental Defense Fund
Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) proposed legislation that would postpone meaningful action on global warming pollution for at least twenty years.

The Voinovich bill is dressed up as a way to take action, but in fact is a detailed prescription for doing nothing.

The proposal would take away state authority to control global warming pollution, undermining efforts in dozens of states, including California, Florida and the Northeast members of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which have set ambitious emissions reduction targets. And this is just the beginning.

We need to do everything we can to defeat Senator Voinovich's sham proposal. Email your Senators today.

Dear Senator,

Senator George Voinovich recently proposed legislation that would allow global warming pollution to increase for decades. Even though the proposal is being pitched as a way to address global warming, its real impact would be to block serious global warming action this year.

I urge you to oppose the Voinovich proposal.

The proposal calls for weak, non-binding emissions reduction benchmarks - current levels in 2020 and 1990 levels in 2030 - while providing taxpayer-funded subsidies for favored technologies.

Members of the 'reality-based' public world-wide are sick of - and because of - powerful industry being given carte blanche to pollute and exert control instead over the public in the form of restrictions imposed by 'industry-friendly' government, especially in and through the U.S. government as a world leader in industrial globalization benefitting the few at the cost of democracy, ground-level economies, ecologies and our very existance. Democratic government is only legitimate within the definition of 'rule by the ruled'; commercial self-interests have no place over members of the public, and current trends within legislation and 'public health' demonstrate clearly that we've all been sold down a very toxic river indeed. Self-interest dictates a return to common-sense, democracy, and a science-based view of industrial toxins and influence of public policy, or only a short-term view can exist in a rapidly dying world.

Senator Voinovich does not seem to realize that postponing the hard work needed to stop global warming (also called climate change) is similar to appeasement which Chamberlain tried to do to stop World War 2. Hundreds of millions will die if action is not taken now. Action which does not have loopholes to support fossil fuels is vital. The Republicans seem to feel that is better for them to get rich to-day than have their grandchildren able to live as well as Americans lived during the Depression.

We need to address global warming now with strong, meaningful measures. Global warming will be beyond mankind's control soon. We need to act now so a popular question in the near future won't be "Mom, where's my outside suit?"

We need real control - not placebos. Haven't we had enough of this administration's undermining the issues at hand?

The time to act is NOW... there will be NO future unless you, as our voices in government speak up. Please do not allow the greed of few to compromise us all!

I was a Republican for 34 years, and did not vote for Bush on either occasion . The new Republican agenda is to ignore a serious problem that affexts all people in the world and especially in the US. I am no longer a Republican, and am angry at the arrogance and ignorance that the fragments of the party have chosen to adopt.
