Stop Big Oil's Push to Open the Arctic Refuge

Target: United States Senate
Sponsored by: Care2
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America's threatened polar bears. Known as America's Serengeti, this stunning refuge teems with wildlife such as caribou, snow fox and millions of migratory birds.

But with oil prices skyrocketing, the Bush administration and Big Oil are pushing harder than ever to drill in this special place. Even the Bush administration's recent decision to protect polar bears under the Endangered Species Act includes provisions to allow drilling in polar bear habitat such as the Refuge.

Take action now -- tell your Senators to reject drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and support permanent protections for this special place.

Dear Senators,

I am writing today to strongly urge you support S.2316 to permanently protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

S.2316, sponsored by Senator Joseph Lieberman, would permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- the Refuge's biological heart -- as a wilderness area with permanent protections.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is currently protected from harmful new drilling operations. But year after year, big oil companies and their allies relentlessly lobby for new drilling in this special place. This year is no exception, and rising oil prices have brought renewed calls to open up this special place. President Bush has even included revenues from Arctic Refuge drilling in his latest budget.

In the past there have been many recipies for cars that run on steam or very very little gas,but the oil cos. have baughten them or threatened the inventers of such vehicles. Why? It's all about money. We know that and we hate it. It is time that our leaders got the lead out of their ass and allow these autos to be built ad at an affordable price. It can be done. Money is only money. It can be made in many different ways but once the wildlife envirnment has been distroied (as with Prince Williams Sound) it takes thousands or hundreds of thousands of years to get it back to some normalsy. Some things will and have disappeared forever. That is sad especially because it happened before their time because of our carlessness. You may not want to think of those that are born after you,but think of how this world would be now if places like yellowstone The olympic national parks and other places weren't saved? no one would have any idea as to what life was like and should be like in the future. These people cared enough to save these refuges and national forests. We need to do our part also. We are already recycling trash but it's not enough. We need to forgo the money in oil and get these gas and oil free cars on the roads NOW! We can't wait any more. Debby

A stop-gap measure extending our reliance on non-renewable resources is not the answer. We need to invest the money earmarked for drilling in ANWR in alternative energy, thereby decreasing the amount of damage to the earth caused by fossil fuels and insuring that a sustainable alternative is found.

The arctic refuge is one of the extremely few zones on earth that can sustain a large number of species whose existence is important to the balance of nature. We must also keep in mind that some of these creatures face the risk of extinction and theres no other place that they can find refuge.

I grew up in Alaska and know whereof I speak. Drilling in ANWR will NOT lead to energy independence, just a spoiled eden and a few months delay in our having to face the music.

There are clearly better options then destroying this land. We are already hurting the environment enough, it is just plain stupid to add to it.

Please protect the arctic wildlife and do not allow drilling in their refuge and give these creatures permanent protection. This would not even come close to solving our energy problems by drilling there. That notion is as ludicrous as believing that spitting in the ocean would fix a water shortage.

There is far too little refuges like this one left in the whole world and although many of us are feeling the crunch of the oil crisis, it would be greiviously wrong of us to do any new drilling in this area. Along with global warming, this may very well be one of the last places for such wildlife to live, survive and thrive. Don't make these animals or our children pay the price for destroying this area.

There is no reason to sacrifice a refuge for a questionable source of possible fuel. We should be concentrating on finding other sources for energy that doesn't harm animals or our citizens.

we only have one alaska . lets protect it from any harm. theryre are other ways in which to overcome ruining what nature has left us, as modern as can gt ,use modern and nature to get through this, like solar wind and as to do no harm to our animal planet with much litlle wild left ,why should we take it away for human greed?

This year is no exception, and rising oil prices have brought renewed calls to open up this special place. President Bush has even included revenues from Arctic Refuge drilling in his latest budget. view more The Arctic Refuge is not only home to caribou, snow fox and millions of migratory birds, it is also one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America's remaining polar bears. These magnificent animals are struggling for survival with scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey warning that America's polar bears could be extinct by 2050. The Fish & Wildlife Service just listed the polar bear as "threatened" on the Endangered Species List - yet this listing included qualifications to allow drilling in polar bear habitat. Drilling and the transportation and infrastructure needed to support it could wreak havoc on polar bears and the habitat they need to survive. There are around 400 crude oil and toxic spills every year at the Prudhoe oil field, just 30 miles west of the Arctic Refuge. If drilling -- and the development that comes with it -- is permitted in this important habitat, polar bears may abandon their dens, leaving cubs to die. I strongly urge you to support S.2316. Only a "wilderness" designation will stop the relentless efforts to drill in this special place and focus on real energy solutions like energy efficiency and the development of clean, renewable alternatives to fossil fuels. Sincerely, Maureen Aponte

The wildlife of the artic circle and circumpolar region is already in jeopardy. We need to act quickly to save these species from an otherwise certain extinction. Please vote to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge! Thank you.

It is unconscionable in this day and age for us to destroy a place as important as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. We know that drilling there will provide only a partial and temporary solution to our energy troubles at the price of the further destruction of our planet.

The Arctic Wildlife refuge is precious and cannot be replicated should it be destroyed. As elected members of the Senate from Michigan, home state for Isle Royale, one of America's pristine National Parks, designated Federal Wilderness and International Biosphere Reserve, you should understand the importance of protecting the unique ecological and wildlife resources entrusted to you.

I love animals, and I know thats thats probably not the best reason but its not the only reason. I want my future kids and grandkids to know and possibly see a real live animal from the arctic, drilling and destroying their home will ruin that.

As one of the last pristine wild places left on this earth it is much more important to protect this land than it is to use for uneeded drilling that will only make rich oil execs and corrupt politicians richer.
