Stop Big Oil's Push to Open the Arctic Refuge

Target: United States Senate
Sponsored by: Care2
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America's threatened polar bears. Known as America's Serengeti, this stunning refuge teems with wildlife such as caribou, snow fox and millions of migratory birds.

But with oil prices skyrocketing, the Bush administration and Big Oil are pushing harder than ever to drill in this special place. Even the Bush administration's recent decision to protect polar bears under the Endangered Species Act includes provisions to allow drilling in polar bear habitat such as the Refuge.

Take action now -- tell your Senators to reject drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and support permanent protections for this special place.

Dear Senators,

I am writing today to strongly urge you support S.2316 to permanently protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

S.2316, sponsored by Senator Joseph Lieberman, would permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- the Refuge's biological heart -- as a wilderness area with permanent protections.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is currently protected from harmful new drilling operations. But year after year, big oil companies and their allies relentlessly lobby for new drilling in this special place. This year is no exception, and rising oil prices have brought renewed calls to open up this special place. President Bush has even included revenues from Arctic Refuge drilling in his latest budget.

The oil companies are trying to pull the wool over our eyes. They are telling us the only solution to the oil crisis is to drill in the Artic. The American people are not stupid. Everyone knows that the amount of oil in the Artic is not enough to make much of a difference in the long run. The only ones who will benefit are the "oil baronss." And what will be the price? There won't be lower prices at the gas pump and we will have destroyed our majestic polar bears and our treasured Artic National Wildlife Refuge.

In order for us to protect the environment from furthre damages we must protect our natural resources, which includes the Artic area. Theodore Roosevelt had the foresight to protect as much of our natural resources for future generations and we need to continue hisleadership in that area. We need to start spending less money on oil and begin finding a long term solution to our energy crisis. What this country needs now our leaders not followers of the norm. We need the kind of leader that will take us into new horizans the way that Roosevelt and Kennedy did. The time for big oil companies is over and we need a strong person to stand up for us and our natural resources. We need strong leaders who recognize that and I believe that when I voted for you, you could be that type of leader. Don't let our hope for what our future can be die becuase we weren't strong enough to stop where we are headed now.

Our oil prices have risen because of greed, not lack of oil. This is just an excuse to invade another pristine area and despoil it. President Bush should be ashamed of himself; he knows better!

S.2316, sponsored by Senator Joseph Lieberman, would permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- the Refuge's biological heart -- as a wilderness area with permanent protections. I urge you to encourage constructive and not destructive ways to make better use of energy sources. There is the scientific knowledge to generate energy without further destroying our last natural spaces. Take strong leadership in encouraging industry to creatively pursue new more sustainable options .

Where will it end? Destroying wildlife refuge or wildlife itself is not the answer! It's your world, how do you want to live in it? How do you want future generations to live in it?

Dear Senators, Having recently lived among the Alaskan Eskimos who depend on a subsistence life style for survival, I strong urge your support of S.2316 to prevent drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Oil companies are making billions of dollars in profits while the poor in Alaska are having their lifestyle threatened because some of the animals they depend for their livelihood breed in the Refuge. Please consider their needs. How can we allow big oil companies to profit at the expense of the poor? Sincerely, Kathyn Katusz

We need to hold the oil companies responsible. They are operating at record profit. They have helped to destroy the economy and make claims of the need for record profits. We as the consumer are given no record income. Destroying our wild life is not going to bring down the price of gas. Taking away these companies record profits will. They have always operated in the profit margine, and have never given back to the people. It is time to hold them accountable. I support S.2316 we need to protect wild life and our selves from oil companys.

We are driving all our wildlife out. This is the last reserve where we have multitudes of animals and now we want to destroy this for the rich to get richer??? Alaska Oil is shipped to Japan and only making the rich richer, not helping the middle class and poor of the USA.

There's not enought resources in the artic to justify the expense of mining them. My brother works in the power industry as an engineer. For years he's talked about how companies spend millions to get to minescule amounts of fossil fuels when we should be devoting resources to green alternatives. I apologize for any typoes I may have made & thank you for your time, Salomea Wheeler

It is ours to preserve not to destroy! Reading many articles I find that large deposit of oil lay under North and South Dakota, as well as Nevada. Why is it necessary to purposely go into the wilderness area? I think you are being controlled by the large firms, and of course the can extract oil for their gain not paying any land holder royality or answering to people who just might inhabit the areas surrounding. Why have you not stepped up and given protection to those who have the technology to run all these internal combustion engins on water? Stay out !

I think its clear that oil companies cannot continue to have a high profit margin for their product. It is destroying the economy. They claim other industries such as computers have the same profit margin, but what they don't say is "even though you may only but a computer every two years and you buy a gallon of gas for every 20 miles you drive, its the same profit margin". which is great if your talking to people with an IQ of 5, Convert to natural gas, build that pipeline from Alaska to the lower 48 to transport the natural gas so they can quit burning it into the atmosphere. Build electric vehicles out of carbon fiber, and have gas stations serve as battery stations. Advance coal gasification to make diesel fuel, and save the corn for feeding the starving people around the world. You have the power, tell big oil to lower the price or go to prison. Do all these things and you can leave the ANWR alone.

Drilling more oil isn't the answer, least of all from pristine, protected land. Suing OPEC is just as ill conceived an idea. Grow some f-ing balls and go after the REAL problem: Big Oil and their shady business tactics, intentional underproduction, and nauseating profits.

Dear Senators: I applaud Senator Lieberman's actions to permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic national Wildlife Refuge - which will protect and not foster the extinction of wildlife. The impact on lowering gasoline prices is minimal & persons of my age will not see the savings - doubful that it will evan come to pass for our grandchildren, etc. Give the little guys a chance to propagate and stop any and all thoughts of allowing drilling in this special place. President Bush has even included revenues from Arctic Refuge drilling in his latest budget. view more The Arctic Refuge is not only home to caribou, snow fox and millions of migratory birds, it is also one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America's remaining polar bears. These magnificent animals are struggling for survival with scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey warning that America's polar bears could be extinct by 2050. The Fish & Wildlife Service just listed the polar bear as "threatened" on the Endangered Species List - yet this listing included qualifications to allow drilling in polar bear habitat. Drilling and the transportation and infrastructure needed to support it could wreak havoc on polar bears and the habitat they need to survive. There are around 400 crude oil and toxic spills every year at the Prudhoe oil field, just 30 miles west of the Arctic Refuge. If drilling -- and the development that comes with it -- is permitted in this important habitat, polar bears may abandon their dens, leaving cubs to die. I strongly urge you to support S.2316. Only a "wilderness" designation will stop the relentless efforts to drill in this special place and focus on real energy solutions like energy efficiency and the development of clean, renewable alternatives to fossil fuels. view less Sincerely, Sumiko Miles
