Stop Big Oil's Push to Open the Arctic Refuge

Target: United States Senate
Sponsored by: Care2
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America's threatened polar bears. Known as America's Serengeti, this stunning refuge teems with wildlife such as caribou, snow fox and millions of migratory birds.

But with oil prices skyrocketing, the Bush administration and Big Oil are pushing harder than ever to drill in this special place. Even the Bush administration's recent decision to protect polar bears under the Endangered Species Act includes provisions to allow drilling in polar bear habitat such as the Refuge.

Take action now -- tell your Senators to reject drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and support permanent protections for this special place.

Dear Senators,

I am writing today to strongly urge you support S.2316 to permanently protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

S.2316, sponsored by Senator Joseph Lieberman, would permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- the Refuge's biological heart -- as a wilderness area with permanent protections.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is currently protected from harmful new drilling operations. But year after year, big oil companies and their allies relentlessly lobby for new drilling in this special place. This year is no exception, and rising oil prices have brought renewed calls to open up this special place. President Bush has even included revenues from Arctic Refuge drilling in his latest budget.

With all that oil going into this reserve ,an at 97% FULL.Don't you think it's about time that we started helping the americans at the pump?.There is no need to start projects in the Artic. Will you people use better judgement,DO NOT LISTEN TO PRESIDENT BUSH."GOD,I CAN"T WAIT FOR CHANGE".

Once the Refuge is gone, it's gone forever. We should find alternatives to oil altogether and not encourage further consumption by drilling in some of our most precious places.

Please put the long term interests of our planet ahead of the short term interests of the oil companies.

Regardless of the fact that ANWR is a protected wilderness area, the oil in ANWR does not create a long-term solution for our country. We need to be investing in alternative energy, not bowing to the demands of the greediest people on Earth: Big Oil!

we need to protect something and the refuge is one of them. rare and unique it deserves the protection.

More drilling is not the answer. Please find other alternatives to oil so we don't have to drill.

I live in Brooklyn, so high gas prices do effect me. However, the extensive damage that drilling has already done to the environment is much worse than having to pay extra for gas, in a city that offers numerous options for public transportation. I DO NOT condone the drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge!
# 238:

Please know that you must never let ANWR be open to drilling. Please permanently leave it untouched by BIG OIL and demand other (long-time neglected) alternatives. Like cars which get 40+ mpg. They are out there, our representatives have just been too weak to protect us, our lungs, our health, our environment.

The Artic Refuge must come first over profits. We need to focus our ingenuity on alternative sources of energy. Oil=death!

It will take 2 decades for oil from the Arctic Refuge to have any effect on gas prices. We cannot be dependant on oil in 2 decades. The destruction of wildlife for such a non benefit is unconscionable. Spend the time and money finding alternatives.

instead of funding the development of alternate, non-polluting energy, this government chooses to pollute the artic refuge as well as continuing to fatten the pockets of our oil companies. don't you, off the record, think this is the poorest judgement any government can have, and the most shameful decision any government can make?

Not only should our Arctic wildlife be protected, but our oil should be, too. How does it reduce our dependence on foreign oil to pump OURS our of the ground and burn it up as fast as possible? Why should we not save it for an emergency?

There are very few places on this earth that we have left alone. Please work to keep this wildlife refuge for the species that depend on it. We need to be working towards other forms of energy and should stop the oil speculating that is driving up the profits. I used to work for an oil trader, so I know first hand how a tanker full of oil can change hands 1/2 dozen times during its journey from the middle east. Each trade generates profits for the trader/speculators. The oil companies should also be limited on their profit margins. We shoudl also be working towards making cars more fuel efficient.

I feel the Artic wildlife refuge should be drilled only as a last resort. We are not there yet. We should spend our time and energy on finding other energy resources such as the sun and wind. Nobody is going to think outside the box for new energy resources if there is no incentive.

This year is no exception, and rising oil prices have brought renewed calls to open up this special place. President Bush has even included revenues from Arctic Refuge drilling in his latest budget. view more The Arctic Refuge is not only home to caribou, snow fox and millions of migratory birds, it is also one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America's remaining polar bears. These magnificent animals are struggling for survival with scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey warning that America's polar bears could be extinct by 2050. The Fish & Wildlife Service just listed the polar bear as "threatened" on the Endangered Species List - yet this listing included qualifications to allow drilling in polar bear habitat. Drilling and the transportation and infrastructure needed to support it could wreak havoc on polar bears and the habitat they need to survive. There are around 400 crude oil and toxic spills every year at the Prudhoe oil field, just 30 miles west of the Arctic Refuge. If drilling -- and the development that comes with it -- is permitted in this important habitat, polar bears may abandon their dens, leaving cubs to die. I strongly urge you to support S.2316. Only a "wilderness" designation will stop the relentless efforts to drill in this special place and focus on real energy solutions like energy efficiency and the development of clean, renewable alternatives to fossil fuels. These alternative energy solutions need to be put into place now in any case as the true cost of fossil fuel usage is right now more like $15 per gallon when you factor in environmental factors and the need to fight wars to get a piece of foreign oil supplies. And all of these hidden costs are being paid for by our tax dollars. Such foolish squandering of our money for the benefit of a few special interests. All of our elected officials should be ashamed of the current waste! Please stop the insanity now!

We must invest in development of alternate energy sources, not further destruction of the environment. Oil is a disgusting substance and should and can be totally eliminated in time.
