Stop Big Oil's Push to Open the Arctic Refuge

Target: United States Senate
Sponsored by: Care2
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America's threatened polar bears. Known as America's Serengeti, this stunning refuge teems with wildlife such as caribou, snow fox and millions of migratory birds.

But with oil prices skyrocketing, the Bush administration and Big Oil are pushing harder than ever to drill in this special place. Even the Bush administration's recent decision to protect polar bears under the Endangered Species Act includes provisions to allow drilling in polar bear habitat such as the Refuge.

Take action now -- tell your Senators to reject drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and support permanent protections for this special place.

Dear Senators,

I am writing today to strongly urge you support S.2316 to permanently protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

S.2316, sponsored by Senator Joseph Lieberman, would permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- the Refuge's biological heart -- as a wilderness area with permanent protections.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is currently protected from harmful new drilling operations. But year after year, big oil companies and their allies relentlessly lobby for new drilling in this special place. This year is no exception, and rising oil prices have brought renewed calls to open up this special place. President Bush has even included revenues from Arctic Refuge drilling in his latest budget.

If would be a catastrophe to allow destruction of even more our this planet's habitat. When will the humankind as a collective whole realize that the rape of this planet will lead to our own doom, not to mention the other creatures that we SHARE the planet with. I do not see the other creatures of this planet consuming the natural resources at a rate that is leading to the destruction of the very planet on which we call HOME. Quite the contrary, the other creatures of this planet have learned to conform to their particular environment and live in harmony with nature. Nature has a balance. When you upset that balance it creates great harm to us all. Let the oil companies take a cut in their profits. THEY can afford it. The planet can not. At what expense is the long-term survival of humankind really worth? If this is allowed, there will not be a long-term period of time to consider. Perhaps members of legislative branch should really consider this before making their decision, that truly will affect us all. Not just in this country, but the entire planet.

Fuel conservation and cleaner alternative energy sources are a MUST. ANWR should not be sacrificed to put more windfall profits in the pockets of Big Oil.

the arctic national wildlife refuge is just that... a refuge and a last bastion for a dangerously positioned ecological system already teetering. The negative consequences are far reaching if places like the refuge are opened up to development by industries that are toxic and destructive to every environment they enter. The gain from such development is insignificant compared to the global loss. Invest in and encourage the development of clean energy that works harmoniously with the environment and minimizes the human footprint. It is possible and it is necessary thank you

I am totally for the Arctic National Wildlife refuge, does this country have to destroy all the beauty God has given us? No more drilling!

Instead more drilling that effects wildlife and the environment and contributing to more Global Heating, we need to finance the development of less polluting energy sources and reconfigure cars, buses, trains and other public transportation to use power source like solar, wind power, and recycled biofuels.

The answer to the oil crisis is NOT drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge! Let's protect these beautiful creatures and this special land so that our children and grandchildren can enjoy it as we have. Please.

The amount of oil available in the ANWR refuge is not significant enough to make the US energy independent from foreign oil nations. The environmental damage would not be worth it. We need to stop our dependence on oil all together not just foreign oil! The bottom line is that drilling in ANWR is not a solution nor a band-aid. Here is why: 1 - Oil from drilling will not reach gas stations for at least 10 years. Oil companies have to find the oil, build the drilling rigs, build transport methods etc. This all takes time. 2 - At best there is 1 to 16 billion barrels of oil present. We use over 7 billion a year - at best there is 24 months of oil in Alaska. Not considering increased demand over the 10 year period. 3 - MORE OIL IS NOT A SOLUTION - ITS A PACIFIER FROM SOME POLITICIANS TO QUIET THE PUBLIC UP AND A GIFT TO THE OIL COMPANIES. Please stop wasting time debating about drilling in Alaska - we all know that it would not solve the oil crisis. Instead of investing money in new drilling sites in the only unspoiled land we have left in America please invest the money in alternative energies!!!

Don't allow the present economic crisis be an excuse to destroy the wonderful Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. We don't need more oil from there, we need refineries first and an alternate source of energy second.

This won't lower gas prices. All it will do is make the companies richer and kill poor innocent animals.

Drilling for oil will not push us to cleaner alternatives. We need to clean things up!

Stop bush, his alike and the all powerful oil companies from destroying our wilderness and animals since no money can buy God's miracles! And please face the truth and which is drilling the Arctic will not lower the gas price at all. It will only add profit to those who make a damn good living from oil!

This oil shortage is just a ploy by big oil to open up the Arctic to drilling there is no shortage start refining all the oil we already have.

Mans ability to desecrate the very planet he lives on and strip it of its natural resources is surely the ultimate folly. We all live here, including the animals. Leave the arctic alone please!
