Help Katrina Victims Get the Medical Care They Need Now!
Target:U.S. Senate, House of Representatives Sponsored by:Consumers Union
As the hurricane victims struggle to rebuild their lives, one of their most immediate needs is access to medical care. Congress has the power to help the children, elderly, sick or people who have lost their jobs to get the health care they need by temporarily covering them under the federal Medicaid program -- without red-tape and hassles.
Under the current proposal, Katrina survivors with incomes below the federal poverty level could get coverage through a temporary five-month program with a possible extension. Congress is expected to vote very soon on this important emergency health-care relief measure.
ThatÂ’s why we need your help today! The Senate has developed a bill that assures comprehensive coverage without red tape, but the House version may limit access to the program for hundreds of thousands of people. Click here for a detailed analysis of the two plans.
Don't let Congress water down this desperately needed relief! Act now by sending a letter to your representatives in both houses of Congress in support of temporary enrollment of hurricane victims in Medicaid.
We signed the “Help Katrina Victims Get the Medical Care They Need Now!” petition!

This petition should not even be needed to go to our Congress to help OUR OWN! I don't remember being part of the decision to go help other countries and have supported it. It is time to look around yourself and really see what is happening in this country.

Supporting temporary Medicaid benefits to eligible Katrina survivors is the quickest easiest method to provide a degree of healthcare to those who so desperately need it.

In times of emergency or catastrophe, it is government's role to provide relief to the victims, health care being an essential part of that relief. Taxpayers like me expect no less. It is so sad that this is being debated at all. If our government hadn't insisted on pursuing an illegal war and lying to the American people about it and maintaining a bloated military budget for years on end, we would have no problem providing for those in need at any time. Thank you for your attention.

Congress does not need to leave these shores to find people that live in Third World conditions. They're our neighbors. Isn't it about time to quit worrying about rich folks taxes, close the offshore loophole and build a better base of consumers in this country? If these people could get a chance you would not need to go to China to find new consumers. Has anyone noticed the balance of trade lately. It is all connected if no one told you. It make econmomic sense even if you're not empathetic. (just in case any of you "conservatives" need an excuse and don't want to be labeled "liberal" for helping the poor)

It's a function of government to protect those who cannot care for themselves, due to natural disasters, etc.

This is the only wealthy country in the world that does not offer universal health care. Katrina has pushed us to be more aware of how we have been leaving behind the poor. This is our chance to right some of the wrongs of indifference. Just imagine the social problems that will escalate if people don't have access to basic medical needs. While we might think we can't afford to take care of the people of our country, perhaps we will at least have the presence of mind to realized how much more it will cost us in the consequences of social decline.

Government must take care of domestic needs first. Hurricane victims should have free medical and financial assistance and not have to pay taxes. These are poor people who have nothing left! Wake up and Stop bombing and killing overseas, then offering "band-aids".

I'm am becoming more and more dismayed with the way Hurricane Katrina has been handled. How are we supposed to have faith in a government that spends money to send aid to other countries after we have bombed them; then they can't even take care of our own national emergencies? I want the money that I contribute through my paycheck to be spent internally, rather than externally. Our own citizens need medical coverage, and they need it now!
