Stop Sea Lion Killing Plan

The National Marine Fisheries Service recently authorized the killing of up to 85 federally protected sea lions this year at the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River in Oregon.
Federal and state officials claim they have to kill sea lions to protect endangered salmon. But sea lions are not the main threat to endangered salmon on the Columbia river - dams, habitat loss and humans are.

Consider the facts:
- Sea lions kill between 0.4% and 4.2% of salmon and steelhead returning to the Columbia River each year;
- Federal dams on the Snake River kill over 15% of returning steelhead and salmon adults each year;
- Oregon and Washington states, which requested permission to kill sea lions, proposed increasing fishing quotas from 9% to 12% of the 2008 salmon run.

Are you kidding me? protecting one species by killing another? Surely that should be God's perogative. As we are fallible, man should STOP deciding what and who is worthy of living and dying. The earth has a way of balancing itself out. Stop playing God!

While I agree that we need to protect salmon, we should do so by limiting human impacts on the salmon and on sea lion habitat which is causing them to eat more salmon in the first place. The sea lions aren't the problem--we are!

Wow, heres an oxymoron if ever I heard one "permission to kill an endangered species". When are the powers that be ever going to come to the realisation that noone gave them the job description of playing 'GOD'?. Protecting salmon? I have never heard so much BS in my life, especially with the plan to increase fishing quota's from 9% to 12%, do you really think the normal hardworking people of this world are going to swallow that like potato soup?

You would think that with all the laws and campaigns in the world, people would understand why senseless slaughter is grave and unacceptable. Stop. Killing. Now. Our Maker did not create these animals so that they could be carelessly destroyed for no reason. Listen to the voices of the people and do what is right. Stop this outrage.
