The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) was passed in 1974 because of increasing public awareness of the need to ensure the safety and welfare of children. CAPTA provides federal money to state and local communities like yours for programs and services to prevent abuse, protect children and strengthen families.
Each year, almost 1 million American children experience abuse and neglect. Of these children, 60 percent suffer neglect, 19 percent physical abuse, 10 percent sexual abuse, and 7 percent emotional maltreatment. All of these forms of abuse can have a lifelong psychological and physical impact on a child. And shockingly, approximately 1400 children are killed each year from abuse, most of whom are under the age of one.
Every five years, CAPTA gets reauthorized. This year it is up for review again. President Bush has already cut many important human service programs in this year's budget (including domestic violence and juvenile justice funds). We need your help to ensure these cuts do not affect the safety of children.
Please ask Congress to not only maintain current funding levels, but to increase funding to keep up with today's economy, so that all children can live in safe and healthy homes.
We signed the “Ensure Children Have Safe and Healthy Homes” petition!

Mandate more prevention services to families. Kentucky's primary efforts are focused toward protection after the fact of an abuse event. Effective Preventive Services could drastically reduce the incidents of child maltreatment, reduce the number of children entering foster care and ultimately enhance the person welfare of each child and adult served. As a front line Protection & Permanency worker I see that drastic efforts are needed to prevent the maltreatment of children rather that the child having trauma echoes throughout life of a significant abuse event, removal, separation from family and loved ones and the mental health issues that accompany that trauma. 98% of my work is with families that have substance abuse issues that hamper or prevent the parent’s needed focus on the child(ren)’s needs. PLEASE HELP.

Please act responsibly and help prevent child abuse. Increase funding to programs that assist children who are abused and at risk. Inflation and the economy require that we allot more money to help protect innocent children and ensure that they are in safe and violence free homes.
CAPTA is time for renewal and you must vote to give more funds to this vital human service program, please.

I want programs to prevent child abuse because no child deserves to be treated poorly. Children are the future of world and all need to be treated with kindness. Children are innocent and need to be well kept and housed in safe homes for a nourishing environment. The government needs to implement programs or increase taxes to make sure that this is possible

A million american children experience abuse and neglect each year! 1400 of these cases result in death. Most of these deaths are of children under the age of one. Please support the funding of CAPTA so to help decrease this staggering 1 million children who live in homes of abuse and neglect!

There is no excuse for child abuse, and no excuse for defunding or cutting the budgets of agencies that deal with this immense problem.

I am a victim of abuse, both as a child and as an adult. My children are victims of abuse by their dad. Assistance not available when I was a child, but my children did. That assistance was greatly appreciated and they are living full and happy lives because of the assistance. I know of other families who have been in the same boat who have benefited.

Children are to be loved and cared for, from the very beginnings of their lives, and not to ensure this is truly despicable. We, as a nation, have done immeasurable damage to our children and, unless we actually pay heed to our consciences, we will be no better than Hitler. They are not meant to be aborted, used for scientific purposes, or physically or mentally abused. The Bible tells us what should happen to anyone who harms one of these, and anyone who turns a blind eye to their agony might as well be directly doing the harm personally.
