Stop the hypocrisy: tell leaders of the religious right to practice what they preach

Target: Ralph Reed, James Dobson, & Lou Sheldon
Sponsored by: Care2
For years, the leaders of the Religious Right have attacked the freedom of women to control their own bodies, waged war on gay marriage, and fought to erode one of the central tenets of our Constitution: the separation between church and state. They claimed the moral high ground, asserting the right to tell people how to live and condemning millions of Americans for actions they deemed immoral.

Now it turns out that leaders of the Religious Right are knee-deep in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal. After years of condemning gambling as a social ill, theyve been caught in pro-gambling campaigns hatched by the indicted lobbyist.

Their high ground has been washed away. Former Christian Coalition Director Ralph Reed made millions from Indian gambling interests, rallying religious conservatives to oppose competing casinos. James Dobson of Focus on the Family recorded anti-gambling ads that a casino-operating Indian tribe paid to air. And Lou Sheldons Traditional Values Coalition was paid $25,000 by online gambling outfit eLottery to lobby congress on its behalf.

Its time to stop the hypocrisy. Millions of Americans have taken their moral cues from these men, only to find out now that they are in bed with the very interests theyve earned their living condemning.

Send a letter to Ralph Reed, James Dobson, and Lou Sheldon and tell them to start practicing what they preach.

For years, youve attacked the freedom of women to control their own bodies, waged war on gay marriage, and fought to erode one of the most central tenets of our Constitution: the separation between church and state.

Youve always claimed the moral high ground, asserting the right to tell people how to live and condemning millions of Americans for actions you deemed immoral. But your high ground is washed away. After years of condemning gambling as a social ill, youre caught knee-deep in pro-gambling campaigns hatched by indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

It's time to stop telling others how to act, and start practicing what you preach.

End your hypocrisy.

Sincerely,

How sad that those who claim to represent their god are so morally bankrupt and hypocritical.

I wonder how it can be so easy for you to judge and condemn so many others, are you currently apologizing to your "flock" for your misdeeds. I imagine not since that might "dry up" your funds from them. It is all about money to you anyhow not moral highness. I think I will write a local editorial describing these "misdeeds".

You're the people Jesus stood up and faught against. You all are disgusting and should be ashamed of yourselves-- a bunch of corrupt liars who have not one shred of humanity in any fiber of your beings.

I knew all along that something was wrong about the religious right. Now the truth is starting to come out that they are wolves in sheeps clothing! Our Jesus would never preach hate. I agree with the signer who said not to practice what you preach!

This comes as no surprise. I have always felt that you were the most hypocritical and hateful of the bunch.

This is nothing new. Throughout history, many of those people in positions of power, power gained from positions of spritual, religious or moral authority, who fervently preach against moral "sin and vice" and aggessively condemn all the "sinners" of the world, turn out to be human after all and commit their fare share of "sin". They also tend to commit even larger sins, crimes even, because they have access to more money and privilige. You know, the "finer things in life". This latest revelation should come as no surprise. But we can never let these hypocrites and criminals get away with it, no matter what. For as longs as they exist so should our sense or social justice. We know that the Religious Right (esp. its leadership) will never act as Jesus would, because he teaches humility, poverty, forgiveness and love no matter what one's enemies perpetrate agaisnt you. So we have to remain ever vigilante when these so-called Christians seek to harm the American people.

If Jesus wasn't ashamed of you folks before, which I'm certain he was, he surely is even more so now. Fools!

As a fellow clergy, I feel it is so important to be honest and consistent. I'm fine with your interest in gambling if you feel and preach that it is okay. Just stop being hypocritical. God bless you.

If they were true Christians, they would be spreading a message of unconditional love instead of one of unconditional hypocrisy!

You can't hide from the truth. God loves all his children but you judge them! You will have to answer for your thoughts and actions when you face Him.

So many times I've seen politicians against gays then found them to be soliticing male prostitutes and picking up gay men online in the news. You live lives as 'do as I say but not as I do'. You need to stay out of our bedrooms and Dr's offices. You can't even run your own lives besides ours. This is one reason I'm proud NOT to be a Christian.
