Stop the hypocrisy: tell leaders of the religious right to practice what they preach

Target: Ralph Reed, James Dobson, & Lou Sheldon
Sponsored by: Care2
For years, the leaders of the Religious Right have attacked the freedom of women to control their own bodies, waged war on gay marriage, and fought to erode one of the central tenets of our Constitution: the separation between church and state. They claimed the moral high ground, asserting the right to tell people how to live and condemning millions of Americans for actions they deemed immoral.

Now it turns out that leaders of the Religious Right are knee-deep in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal. After years of condemning gambling as a social ill, theyve been caught in pro-gambling campaigns hatched by the indicted lobbyist.

Their high ground has been washed away. Former Christian Coalition Director Ralph Reed made millions from Indian gambling interests, rallying religious conservatives to oppose competing casinos. James Dobson of Focus on the Family recorded anti-gambling ads that a casino-operating Indian tribe paid to air. And Lou Sheldons Traditional Values Coalition was paid $25,000 by online gambling outfit eLottery to lobby congress on its behalf.

Its time to stop the hypocrisy. Millions of Americans have taken their moral cues from these men, only to find out now that they are in bed with the very interests theyve earned their living condemning.

Send a letter to Ralph Reed, James Dobson, and Lou Sheldon and tell them to start practicing what they preach.

For years, youve attacked the freedom of women to control their own bodies, waged war on gay marriage, and fought to erode one of the most central tenets of our Constitution: the separation between church and state.

Youve always claimed the moral high ground, asserting the right to tell people how to live and condemning millions of Americans for actions you deemed immoral. But your high ground is washed away. After years of condemning gambling as a social ill, youre caught knee-deep in pro-gambling campaigns hatched by indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

It's time to stop telling others how to act, and start practicing what you preach.

End your hypocrisy.

Sincerely,

After all the examples of these fine 'guardians of the nation's morals' who have been exposed for their blatant hypocrisy, it has become almost laughable when they start telling the rest of us how we should live. I say 'almost' because, unfortunately, there are still plenty of sheep who find blind obedience to these charlatans easier than thinking for themselves. It is absolutely imperative that separation of church and state be preserved as inviolable. I bet that if the day ever comes when some group loyal to something other than their cherished 'christian' dogma constitutes the majority of the population, they'll be crying for separation of church and state. That day may come sooner than they think. Spirit unites, religion divides.

I find it deeply disturbing that these supposed "pro-life" people will blow up clinics with women and children in them getting medical care. They break laws and destroy lives and property, but claim "we are bad"? This would be seen by a sane person as defying the LAWS of the United States! These are the people who committed crimes during the cruisades and murdered millions, including the slaughter of children and entire towns, "for their religion". It's insanity that has spread out of control and must be stopped from spreading to the rest of us. As women we have a Constitutional right to be protected from these criminally insane persons attempting to prevent us from getting medical care. It's none of their business what medical decisions we make in private with our MD's. This privacy from any criminal fanatic is our right until laws are changed, and right now they are allowing us to get an abortion if we need one. We don't need the permission of an uneducated fanatic who tries to push their ignorance on to the rest of us. These people should be institutionalized in mental wards or prisons and leave us alone..

As a Christian, I call on you to stop shaming Christ, to practice spiritual humility, and to cease the blasphemy of claiming to speak in the name of God.

The religious right must soon come to the realization that religion will never trump human rights, and they must be willing to accept that or they will simply be left behind.
