Stop the hypocrisy: tell leaders of the religious right to practice what they preach

Target: Ralph Reed, James Dobson, & Lou Sheldon
Sponsored by: Care2
For years, the leaders of the Religious Right have attacked the freedom of women to control their own bodies, waged war on gay marriage, and fought to erode one of the central tenets of our Constitution: the separation between church and state. They claimed the moral high ground, asserting the right to tell people how to live and condemning millions of Americans for actions they deemed immoral.

Now it turns out that leaders of the Religious Right are knee-deep in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal. After years of condemning gambling as a social ill, theyve been caught in pro-gambling campaigns hatched by the indicted lobbyist.

Their high ground has been washed away. Former Christian Coalition Director Ralph Reed made millions from Indian gambling interests, rallying religious conservatives to oppose competing casinos. James Dobson of Focus on the Family recorded anti-gambling ads that a casino-operating Indian tribe paid to air. And Lou Sheldons Traditional Values Coalition was paid $25,000 by online gambling outfit eLottery to lobby congress on its behalf.

Its time to stop the hypocrisy. Millions of Americans have taken their moral cues from these men, only to find out now that they are in bed with the very interests theyve earned their living condemning.

Send a letter to Ralph Reed, James Dobson, and Lou Sheldon and tell them to start practicing what they preach.

For years, youve attacked the freedom of women to control their own bodies, waged war on gay marriage, and fought to erode one of the most central tenets of our Constitution: the separation between church and state.

Youve always claimed the moral high ground, asserting the right to tell people how to live and condemning millions of Americans for actions you deemed immoral. But your high ground is washed away. After years of condemning gambling as a social ill, youre caught knee-deep in pro-gambling campaigns hatched by indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

It's time to stop telling others how to act, and start practicing what you preach.

End your hypocrisy.

Sincerely,

The single greatest problem facing Christianity today is "Christians." No doubt there a many who actually follow the true tenets of this faith. Unfortunately, they are quietly going about their lives, trying to live as Christ would, while the loud-mouth hypocrites purport to represent "God and Jesus." It makes me sick...

Yes, Do practice what you preach. Before christianity was introduced in this country, we were. If the constitution is to be heard and lived by, you have to remain as that role model. We cannot change if we see that you have become a hypocrite. It just made it even more harder to understand you.

What would Jesus do? Not what you did - that's for sure. The only time it's recorded that Jesus flew off the handle was with moneychangers in the temple. That's what you are. Read the gospels again, and then shut the hell up.

I am sick of all these religious leaders who think are God. They are just human beings like the rest of the us. More compassion is needed. Jesus was full of love and compassion for all people, not just a select few. I say, "amen", to practice what you preach. If not, then don't preach at all. Steven Churchill

Take the braces off your brains. What motivates you to remain so steeped in hatred and bigotry and to invest so much time in trying to harm innocent people? If you think that this is what your god wants you to do, I'd say it's about time that you got a different god.

The word "christian" is tainted because of the way you people interpret the Bible.!!!

t’s time to stop the hypocrisy. Practice what you preach or shut off and stop preaching at the rest of us. I was disgusted during the election to hear people saying "Moral issues" were the top item on their voting criteria. How about jobs for the unemployed? Feeding hungry children? Medical care for everyone?

There should be a distinct division of church and state. The "religious right," or "Christianists" are taking hold of the government our forefathers constructed and trying to mold it to the laws of their own religion.
