Protect Wolves in the Northern Rockies

Dear Secretary Kempthorne,

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife and someone who takes great pride in the successful reintroduction of wolves to the Northern Rockies and Greater Yellowstone Region, I am deeply concerned with your agency's actions to eliminate vital protections for this still-recovering population.

In particular, I am disturbed by your agency's support of rule changes that would allow wolves to be killed in Idaho and Wyoming even before these animals are removed from the list of federally protected threatened and endangered species.

I am also concerned with your agency's support for de-listing of gray wolves. Officials in Idaho and Wyoming have made clear that they intend to "manage" wolves at the lowest level permitted by law, a policy that will likely result in the removal of two-thirds of the wolves in Wyoming and all but approximately 100 wolves in Idaho.

Your agency is charged with protecting America's natural treasures and is accountable to the tens of thousands of people in the Northern Rockies and across the country who have spoken out against the proposal to de-list wolves. I sincerely hope that you will remember these facts as you consider your agency's responsibility to America's future generations.

Thank you for considering my comments.

Sincerely,

After all of this hard work to bring the wolf back we're going back to the policies that helped decimate its original populations? This is not sound environmental policy. The American people love the wolf and believe it deserves it's rightful place as part of the ecosystems in which it evolved.

Dear Dirk, Please--enough with the decimation!!! I remember when we all (including you) worked so hard to bring back the gray wolves from extinction here in Idaho; now, if you don't return to a sane conservation and preservation policy instead of pursuing this publicly uncalled-for, useless and needless rule change, you could turn the years of our work into a survival-for-slaughter pogrom. Save them to kill them? It's not even logical. Let's get back on track, Mr. Secretary; help us celebrate the wolves' delisting with a firmer conservatory promise that what brought the wolves to extinction's door--the fairy-tale fears, the false notion that it's necessary to shoot wolves to protect ranchers' interests, and the frivolous attitude that it's fun to shoot wolves for "sport"--shall not be maintained after all the decades of slow enlightenment regarding these important (and mostly rodent-eating) "quality-control" creatures. // You wouldn't take out your in-sink food waste disposal simply because a few pieces of good food slipped in by accident; likewise, we don't need to take out the strength of the lupine community because a good sheep or calf got caught--and that, most likely due to the rancher's own negligence (especially when coyotes' kills outnumber the wolves' by a ratio of 20 to 1)--plus, the wolves are not yet such an abundant resource as to be managing them through hunting programs. // Let us let them get on their delisted legs, and give them some legs to stand on--so the overall conservation program we started will "have legs" and be able to go the next mile needed before this species is finally free of man's insecure threatenings. Thank you for considering this plea, and keeping our wolves safe from human predation (if you do)--and our posterity also shall thank you. . . .

This is just another devious ways that Bush/Cheney have acted through their administration. I believe that Bush/Cheney need to be brought up as war criminals because they killed innocent people during shock and awe.
