Demand Real Protection for Giant Sequoia National Monument

Target: US Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid; Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi
Sponsored by: Sierra Club
The Giant Sequoia trees of California are the largest living trees in the world ... some are as ancient as 3,400 years old, with a diameter of greater than 35 feet and the height of a 25-story building.

Giant Sequoias are among the oldest living trees on the planet. Many took root long before our great, great grandparents were born, and will live to see our great, great grandchildren -- if we don't allow the timber industry to destroy them first.

The Giant Sequoias were here before our nation was founded, quietly witnessing the evolution of our society. Now our "progress" is the greatest threat to their continued survival.

To: US Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid; Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi

I urge you, as a leader in Congress, to finally bring real protection to the Giant Sequoia National Monument. Proposals for commercial logging in the Monument are in strict violation of the Presidential Proclamation that established this special place and now is the time to insist on real protection.

In addition, I ask that you use your power to transfer the management of the Giant Sequoia National Monument to the National Park Service, where it will be better protected from the timber industry's relentless attacks.

Sincerely,

[your name]

Please save these beautiful giants from their demise. There are plenty of resources that can be recycled and used again instead of tearing down these trees that have been around for hundreds of years. These cannot be replaced in our lifetime and are in need of strict protection from people who's only priority is to make millions in profit.

Some things are worth saving for future generations to enjoy as well as the present generation. The Great Sequoia National Monument surely is well worth saving for this and future generations of Americans to enjoy. Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid, I ask you to exercise all the power at your disposal to protect this resource for this and future generations to enjoy.

These monumental, visually stunning trees are gorgeous, long-living pieces of nature that should NEVER be touched by greedy logging companies and their supporters as they are a great monument and a necessary portion of balance in Mother Nature. I ask that you please protect them so many generations beyond this one can explore the wonder and beauty of these great trees that have already flourished for decades, centuries and more. I think it would be in the best interests of these giant monumental landmarks if the National Park Service would be given control over them so the timber industry could be held at bay. I hope that you will make a decision based on what is best for the land and Mother Nature, and NOT the timber companies.

Is there anything else that needs to be said except this: Do you have any idea how long it takes to grow trees?
