Demand Real Protection for Giant Sequoia National Monument

Target: US Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid; Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi
Sponsored by: Sierra Club
The Giant Sequoia trees of California are the largest living trees in the world ... some are as ancient as 3,400 years old, with a diameter of greater than 35 feet and the height of a 25-story building.

Giant Sequoias are among the oldest living trees on the planet. Many took root long before our great, great grandparents were born, and will live to see our great, great grandchildren -- if we don't allow the timber industry to destroy them first.

The Giant Sequoias were here before our nation was founded, quietly witnessing the evolution of our society. Now our "progress" is the greatest threat to their continued survival.

Sign the petition today to urge US leaders to bring real protection to the Giant Sequoia National Monument.

To: US Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid; Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi

I urge you, as a leader in Congress, to finally bring real protection to the Giant Sequoia National Monument. Proposals for commercial logging in the Monument are in strict violation of the Presidential Proclamation that established this special place and now is the time to insist on real protection.

In addition, I ask that you use your power to transfer the management of the Giant Sequoia National Monument to the National Park Service, where it will be better protected from the timber industry's relentless attacks.

Sincerely,

[your name]

Our psychological health is enhanced by nature. I have enjoyed these trees and hope future generations will be able to. We cannot wait hundreds of years for new trees to grow into these giant ancient wonders.

Shame on you Mr. Bush. I can't imagine why you hate the environment so. On balance, you've done a few good things, the rest are undoing 30 years of protective legislation.

Enough is enough!!! It's about time that more people and more elected politicians stand up for the environment and against Bush's anti-environment policies. We, as a species, have done so much irreparable damage to our planet, that I believe we can no longer afford to damage one more piece of wilderness or protected area. The Bush-buck needs to stop here!!!
