Demand Real Protection for Giant Sequoia National Monument

Target: US Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid; Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi
Sponsored by: Sierra Club
The Giant Sequoia trees of California are the largest living trees in the world ... some are as ancient as 3,400 years old, with a diameter of greater than 35 feet and the height of a 25-story building.

Giant Sequoias are among the oldest living trees on the planet. Many took root long before our great, great grandparents were born, and will live to see our great, great grandchildren -- if we don't allow the timber industry to destroy them first.

The Giant Sequoias were here before our nation was founded, quietly witnessing the evolution of our society. Now our "progress" is the greatest threat to their continued survival.

Sign the petition today to urge US leaders to bring real protection to the Giant Sequoia National Monument.

To: US Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid; Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi

I urge you, as a leader in Congress, to finally bring real protection to the Giant Sequoia National Monument. Proposals for commercial logging in the Monument are in strict violation of the Presidential Proclamation that established this special place and now is the time to insist on real protection.

In addition, I ask that you use your power to transfer the management of the Giant Sequoia National Monument to the National Park Service, where it will be better protected from the timber industry's relentless attacks.

Sincerely,

[your name]

the Giant Sequoia National Monument is a national treasure and needs real, comprehensive protection for all time. The timber industry can and does use trees grown in a sustainable and ecologically friendly manner. I know, because my nephew has a tree farm. The desire of some proponents of the industry to destroy our sequoias is based on rapacious greed, and is not in the best interests of this county or of the majority of its citizenry.

You have the power to save these historic trees so your children and grandchildren can enjoy them and know that YOU made the difference to keep them safe from loggers that would just cut them down to make furniture. What would your children say to you if they knew that you had the power to protect them and did nothing? Think about the legacy you are leaving your children and their children, in the end that is all you have for your future family to remember you by...what did you do in your life, what difference did you make. Protect these trees and let your kids know YOU did it. That is something to be proud of.

Trees are important to our eco system. These are the longest living trees! Think of how long it will take to replace them if we cut them down?!
