Tell Prime Minister Blair: Stop the Darfur Genocide Now

Target: Tony Blair, Prime Minister
Sponsored by: Save Darfur Coalition
The tragedy in Darfur has reached a critical moment. Already millions of Darfuris - driven from their homes - are completely dependent on international aid for food, medicine and shelter. But due to escalating violence, much of that aid can no longer reach those who need it most.

A UN peacekeeping force remains the only hope to bring peace to the region.

But the peacekeeping force - already authorised by the UN Security Council - might never make it to Darfur if the Sudanese government doesn’t agree to let it in. That's why it's so important that our world leaders ramp up the pressure and demand that the peacekeepers are admitted.

Now is the time to remind Prime Minister Tony Blair that Britains are watching, and that we refuse to let the atrocities in Darfur continue.

Dear Prime Minister Blair,

Everyday, the 2.5 million people chased from their homes in Darfur face the threat of starvation, disease, and rape, while the few lucky enough to remain in their homes risk displacement, torture, and murder. Therefore, we call on you to do the following:

• Push for the immediate deployment of the already-authorised UN peacekeeping force.

• Strengthen the understaffed African Union force already in Darfur until the UN force can be deployed.

• Implement a fair and lasting Peace Agreement.

• Increase humanitarian aid and ensure access for delivery.

It's our responsibility - Europeans took what they wanted from Africa then abandoned it. Now we're destroying the climate with our indulgent lifestyles and causing more problems for countries we have previously exploited. Everyone has the same right to life and to live free from fear, hunger and pain. We have the resources and skills to do something about this - if we don't we are responsible for the suffering of everyone in Darfur.

It is about time that you, as British PM, left a positive strand to your much sought after legacy. Take a stand against human rights violations, begin with Darfur and you could move on to Guantanamo Bay...?

Mr Blair, WHat if this was happening to you and your family? The reality is, this is our family. Please do somethiing now to help these most vulnerable of peoples. TO everyone here, it seems the will is not there, but rather the more politically sensitive areas (Lebanon for example) are given priority over the very poor and vulnerable.

The term was coined in 1943 by the Jewish-Polish lawyer Raphael Lemkin who combined the Greek word "genos" (race or tribe) with the Latin word "cide" (to kill). Do we really need to stop and count each dead body before we realize that enough people have died to legimately call this situation in Darfur "GENOCIDE". Hell, even America has called it genocide. Just image it was a members of your society, culture, race or religon that were being massacred, seually assaulted, driven from their land and tortured. I think you would want the UN to call it geocide and send Peacekeepers immediately. The UN Security council have already given its go ahead for Peacekeeping forces, what are we waiting for, hopefully not more death, starvation and torture. Please open your eyes and have some empathy. We can not stand helplessly and allow another Rwanda, Srebrenicia or East Tmor. Please stop the genocide NOW.
