End “Scientific” Whaling, The Whale-Killing Loophole

Target: Ministry of the Environment, Japan
Sponsored by: Care2, Care2
Over 20,000 whales have been killed since commercial whaling was banned by the International Whaling Commission in 1986. How? Partly because a loophole allows any nation to issue itself a permit to kill any number of whales "for the purposes of scientific research" and sell the whale meat in supermarkets later!

Some nations, like Japan, continue to expand their programs of "scientific" killing. In fact, only 11% of Japanese adults support the killings, and so Japan has invested in a public relations offensive to convince the public that whaling is culturally and economically important to Japan and that whales eat too many fish and threaten the conservation of fish stocks - a claim for which there is no scientific basis.

More than 1,400 whales are expected to suffer a long and torturous death this year alone.

Sign this petition to Japan's Ministry of the Environment, urging him to stop flouting our international agreement to protect whales via so-called "scientific" whale-killing.

Dear Ministry,

Commercial whaling during the last century decimated most of the world's whale populations - between 1925 and 1975, it is estimated that more than 1.5 million whales were killed in total. The Ministry of the Environment is an important institution within the Japanese government, and I ask that you use your influence to end the use of "scientific whaling."

Since the world community agreed to protect whales in 1986, over 20,000 whales have been killed, many for so-called "scientific" reasons, even though the whale meat is later sold in supermarkets.

We are far too close to witnessing a return to large-scale commercial whaling. Norway continues its commercial whaling program in the North Atlantic, openly flouting the IWC's moratorium. Your support of "scientific" whaling propagates the problem further; now Iceland has announced a three-year "scientific" whaling program that failed to meet the approval of the IWC's Scientific Committee and which the US has termed "useless."

In the past three years, Japan, Norway and Iceland have all increased resources devoted to whaling programs, despite the fact that some studies show that only 11% of Japan's adult population actively supports whaling.

Please be an international leader by stopping this practice.

The undersigned,
We signed the “End “Scientific” Whaling, The Whale-Killing Loophole” petition!

These animals are under threat of extinction already, killing them won't help matters. My kindergartener could tell you that.

There's just no good reason to still be whaling. What sort of 'scientific knowledge' can possibly be gained by murdering thousands upon thousands of whales??? Change the wording of the legislation and ban whale-fin soup!!!!!! So there!

Are we trying to rid the Earth of all animals for the research of Science? This is barbaric!

Whales should never have to suffer or be killed for any reason. They deserve to live in their natural environment without being disturbed. Anything else is cruel, destructive, and unnecessary.

We had an agreement with them to protect the whales and if we cannot trust them to honor it, we should should place sanctions on this country until they do what they promised.

The practice of killing whales needs to be stoped. We do not understand how whales fit into the complex marine ecosystem and therefore we do not know what effect we are causing.

Whales are sentient animals, and not a threat to humans. They have language, and rear their young as we do. Let them live!

This is unacceptable behavior which you think you are getting away with. However, you are losing face in the eyes of the world by doing such practices. It is a shame the whale numbers must suffer because of your arrogance.

Japan deserves international censure for this practice. Thinking, feeling humans know when to question the status quo and traditions, cultural or otherwise.

It is unnecessary and kills a highly intelligent and diminishing species. Everyone knows the real reason these animals are killed is for food in Japan. There is plenty to eat in a rich country like Japan without driving another wild animal to extinction. We cannot continue eating what our ancestors did without irreparable harm.

Whales will become extinct if you do not stop killing them. Please consort with Bobby Kennedy Jr. of the the Natural Resources Defense Council to set up a program of species trade offs as they are beginning to do in the United States. A new balance between commercial Fishing and preservation of species is the responsibility of every country of the world now in order to secure our world's food for the future and we must begin to form a workable "United Seas" in order to get our food from the seas while preserving species. This is VERY URGENT AT THIS TIME. Thank you.
