Support Proposal to List Polar Bears As "Threatened"

Target: U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
Send in your public comment to support listing polar bears as a "Threatened" species!

Polar bears really need our help: according to government studies in recent months, more and more are starving to death, and more and more of their babies are dying before reaching adulthood. In fact, of polar bears studied between 1990 and last spring, only 25 cubs per 100 females survived. That's less than half the survival rate of polar bear cubs studied from 1967 to 1989!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is requesting public comments regarding the listing of polar bears as a "Threatened" species. In just 5 minutes, you can send in your public comment - just sign this petition.

As an animal enthusiast and someone concerned about global climate change, I am writing today to voice my strong support for the proposal to list polar bears as "Threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.

As you know, at least five of the world's 19 polar bear populations are currently in decline from the complex effects of global warming. At this rate, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) is predicting a 30 percent reduction in polar bear numbers in the next 45 years.

In Alaska, we already see the effects of climate change, with the birth and survival rates of our polar bears plummeting as ice packs shrink and the bears' hunting opportunities become more limited.

As a global leader, the United States has an obligation to protect this majestic animal from extinction. Listing the polar bear alone isn't a solution. Any hopes for saving these animals should be coupled with a reduction greenhouse gas emissions to address the root cause of global warming. In addition, essential protections against harmful oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Bristol Bay and other crucial habitat areas must be provided to ensure the survival of polar bears.

Thank you for considering my comments.

the data about polar bears is more than alarming; it's indicting. please - for the sake of the future of this gorgeous species - and our own, may the threat to polar bears be acknowledged and documented. all we as individuals can do is express our thoughts&feelings; the real power is finally in the hands of those who hopefully listen. merci~

Let's get at this idea before it is too late! The polar bears are such an important part of our environment and bring many thousands of years of human/bear interaction and wisdom. Let's not make them an icon like the Unicorn... something only remembered in myths.

These amazing bears are very important to the ecosystem up there. They need to be placed on the endangered species list. Too many lifeforms on this planet is dying off due to our inability to protect them - please do not let this be another of those.

Although I live far from the areas affected, I do believe the scientific reports which come across my desk. I urge the Fish and Wildlife Service to take serious action to preserve the animals of the north.

Polar bears are like the canary in the coal mine. What we allow to happen to them will eventually happen to us all.

As more of their habitat disapears due to humane actions, the polor bears will become even more "threatened" and in light of current climate change this is not likely to end soon!

No Global Warming huh? Why then are these beautiful animals drowning and starving? We need to protect them as we do all wildlife because if we don't it is sure that we are next.

Predators are the key to healthy eco-systems. THEY MUST BE SAVED, IF WE ARE TO HAVE A WORLD WORTH LIVING IN . . .

AS an indicator specie, polar bears need to be "listened to" and that includes protecting them.

Polar bears like many predators are keystone players in local ecologies. Their near or true absence will adversely affect many other animals and plants only leaving a few overpopulated species. Polar bears arre drowning and starving in large numbers. Please give them the support they need to survive.

Polar bears are magnificent creatures. We owe it to Nature and the value of diversity to do our best to preserve them in their natural habitat.

With the current rate of decline among polar bear populations, we can't ignore that this species is currently being threatened. We need to take action now.
