Support Proposal to List Polar Bears As "Threatened"

Target: U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife
Send in your public comment to support listing polar bears as a "Threatened" species!

Polar bears really need our help: according to government studies in recent months, more and more are starving to death, and more and more of their babies are dying before reaching adulthood. In fact, of polar bears studied between 1990 and last spring, only 25 cubs per 100 females survived. That's less than half the survival rate of polar bear cubs studied from 1967 to 1989!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is requesting public comments regarding the listing of polar bears as a "Threatened" species. In just 5 minutes, you can send in your public comment - just sign this petition.

As an animal enthusiast and someone concerned about global climate change, I am writing today to voice my strong support for the proposal to list polar bears as "Threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.

As you know, at least five of the world's 19 polar bear populations are currently in decline from the complex effects of global warming. At this rate, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) is predicting a 30 percent reduction in polar bear numbers in the next 45 years.

In Alaska, we already see the effects of climate change, with the birth and survival rates of our polar bears plummeting as ice packs shrink and the bears' hunting opportunities become more limited.

As a global leader, the United States has an obligation to protect this majestic animal from extinction. Listing the polar bear alone isn't a solution. Any hopes for saving these animals should be coupled with a reduction greenhouse gas emissions to address the root cause of global warming. In addition, essential protections against harmful oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Bristol Bay and other crucial habitat areas must be provided to ensure the survival of polar bears.

Thank you for considering my comments.

The listing of this species as "threatened" is vital for its continued existance on this planet. We must do what we can to help the situation we created.

Even if you care not a horse's patoot about polar bears as fellow beings on our planet worthy of respect, consider that polar bears play a vital role in the ecological balance of their polar habitat, and are very much the "canary in the coal mine." If compromising their habitat is threatening their survival, it's pretty much a given that such compromise is threating the survival of humans as well. That includes you, your children, and all who might come after them. When the level of damage to the ecological balance in the polar regions reaches it's tipping point, the effects will not only be catastrophic (we already know this), but, I also believe, will manifest with shocking speed. Because that's what tipping points do, and might well be doing already, even as you are reading these petitions. We probably can't save ourselves from all the damage done, but we can make the needed changes to mitigate what is coming--and one important aspect is to formally declare the polar bears a Threatened Species, with all the protections this declaration ensures.

Polar Bears are not the only ones threatened by global warming. We all are. IT's time to start protecting the environment.

If we can save the polar bears we may be able to save the humans. Humans are already threatened, but we don't like to face that fact.

Just because we don't live there doesn't mean it's not important to us. Please, as caretakers of out most precious wildlife do all that is necessary to carry out their survival. It is in the best interest of all who live on Earth as we know it.

The thought that our global warming is killing polar bears is particularly abhorent. Polars bears deserve classification as an endangered species. I sincerely urge the Fish and Waildlife Service to take the appropriate action. Anton S. Morton

This is a disgrace & we can stop it. What do we say to our grandchildren when they ask what happened to the Polar Bears? "I was too busy to care?!?" I hope not! We MUST save the Polar Bears now! When they're gone, there won't be any more!

The evidence is overwhelming that polar bears are, at minimum, a "threatened" species. There is little doubt that they are on the way to extinction unless efforts are made to prevent this from happening.

It's just plain immoral to let these creatures die out because people are too lazy to save them. Besides, polar bears are like the canary in the coal mine. If they're having trouble because of climate change, what makes you think that won't affect humans? It's time to accept reality that there's a problem & take action before it's too late.

A sign of global warming is the plight of the polar bears. We must protect these beautifull animals and list them as threatened because they are threatened and will completely die off forever usless we take a first step to stop this.

I am an animal lover; I believe that we are all one spiritually. My heart breaks every time I hear news about the polar bears. Some folks can go to great lengths to help whales; the same consideration can be given to the polar bears. Just because they are out in the coldest part of the world doesn't mean they don't deserve to be rescued. Please list them as "threatened." Every animal who loses on this planet is a distinct threat to every other living species. Everything effects everything else. This is a whole, living organism, this planet. Why is it so difficult for this to be understood? I don't understand the carelessness unless it is because our own species has become so careless. Thank you for being a pioneer in this area.

A major decline in Polar Bears has been very obvious. Birth rate is lowered. Frightened mothers often flee without their cubs. Ice melting due to warmer conditons leave them stranded or drowned. If they are not listed as THREATENED it would make think that the Polar Bears 'clearing'out is clearing a way towards drilling in 'their' areas. Be responsible. Do the RIGHT THING!

Please lets save the polar bears! Who the hell wants to live in a world without the rich natural resources mother earth provides us. The all mighty dollar is ruining our planet. We have to root out the evil in our government. Their only interest is money and lining their own pockets. Please folks wake up. 911 was an inside job!! 911truthnc.org
