Polar bears really need our help: according to government studies in recent months, more and more are starving to death, and more and more of their babies are dying before reaching adulthood. In fact, of polar bears studied between 1990 and last spring, only 25 cubs per 100 females survived. That's less than half the survival rate of polar bear cubs studied from 1967 to 1989!

Even if you care not a horse's patoot about polar bears as fellow beings on our planet worthy of respect, consider that polar bears play a vital role in the ecological balance of their polar habitat, and are very much the "canary in the coal mine." If compromising their habitat is threatening their survival, it's pretty much a given that such compromise is threating the survival of humans as well. That includes you, your children, and all who might come after them. When the level of damage to the ecological balance in the polar regions reaches it's tipping point, the effects will not only be catastrophic (we already know this), but, I also believe, will manifest with shocking speed. Because that's what tipping points do, and might well be doing already, even as you are reading these petitions. We probably can't save ourselves from all the damage done, but we can make the needed changes to mitigate what is coming--and one important aspect is to formally declare the polar bears a Threatened Species, with all the protections this declaration ensures.

I am an animal lover; I believe that we are all one spiritually. My heart breaks every time I hear news about the polar bears. Some folks can go to great lengths to help whales; the same consideration can be given to the polar bears. Just because they are out in the coldest part of the world doesn't mean they don't deserve to be rescued. Please list them as "threatened." Every animal who loses on this planet is a distinct threat to every other living species. Everything effects everything else. This is a whole, living organism, this planet. A major decline in Polar Bears has been very obvious. Birth rate is lowered. Frightened mothers often flee without their cubs. Ice melting due to warmer conditons leave them stranded or drowned. If they are not listed as THREATENED it would make think that the Polar Bears 'clearing'out is clearing a way towards drilling in 'their' areas. Be responsible. Do the RIGHT THING!
