Support Proposal to List Polar Bears As "Threatened"

Target: U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
Send in your public comment to support listing polar bears as a "Threatened" species!

Polar bears really need our help: according to government studies in recent months, more and more are starving to death, and more and more of their babies are dying before reaching adulthood. In fact, of polar bears studied between 1990 and last spring, only 25 cubs per 100 females survived. That's less than half the survival rate of polar bear cubs studied from 1967 to 1989!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is requesting public comments regarding the listing of polar bears as a "Threatened" species. In just 5 minutes, you can send in your public comment - just sign this petition.

As an animal enthusiast and someone concerned about global climate change, I am writing today to voice my strong support for the proposal to list polar bears as "Threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.

As you know, at least five of the world's 19 polar bear populations are currently in decline from the complex effects of global warming. At this rate, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) is predicting a 30 percent reduction in polar bear numbers in the next 45 years.

In Alaska, we already see the effects of climate change, with the birth and survival rates of our polar bears plummeting as ice packs shrink and the bears' hunting opportunities become more limited.

As a global leader, the United States has an obligation to protect this majestic animal from extinction. Listing the polar bear alone isn't a solution. Any hopes for saving these animals should be coupled with a reduction greenhouse gas emissions to address the root cause of global warming. In addition, essential protections against harmful oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Bristol Bay and other crucial habitat areas must be provided to ensure the survival of polar bears.

Thank you for considering my comments.

It is time to protect the polar bears. They are innocent victims of our selfish actions.

Please act in a responsible manner to help protect animals who do not deserve to have their lives destroyed by human behaviour.

Polar bears are threatened hugely by climate change in particular, having trouble swimming the widening distance between solid ice to hunt. We must list them as endangered but also realise the impact our wider actions are having on the world. Not only our consumption of energy and fossil fuels but also the growing numbers of us doing so. Cutting the human birthrate is the best way to combat climate change, pollution and human waste.

Polar bears need to be listed as threatened so that they are protected! They're such beautiful animals, it would be awful for them to become extinct.
