Make Pre-k Available for Every Child

Target: Rep. George Miller, Chair, and Rep. Buck McKeon, Ranking Member, House Committee on Education and Labor
Sponsored by: Pre-K Now

For the first time in four years, the number of governors recommending increases in pre-k funding declined. With 22 states facing deficits, the economic downturn felt coast to coast threatens to halt years of positive momentum to make quality pre-k available to every three and four year old.

The Pre-K Act would change that by providing billions of dollars to support preschool programs nationwide. It would:

* reduce student-teacher ratios;
* recruit and retain qualified teachers with bachelor's degrees in early childhood education;
* address the cultural and linguistic needs of English Language Learners;
* provide full-day vs. half-day programs, and
* other activities that support program quality.

Preschool has proven to be highly beneficial to children, preparing them mentally and socially for their upcoming education. Quality preschool shouldn't be only available to the wealthy. Make it possible for every child -- sign the letter today.

I am writing to express my strong support for the PRE-K Act, introduced by Rep. Mazie Hirono, which would expand access to pre-k programs for our nation's four year olds. I urge you to move this bill to the top of your committee's agenda.

We have a narrow window of opportunity in each child's life when early education can set him or her on a trajectory for success. Delaying this legislation is denying millions of American children the chance to enter school ready and confident. Ask any Kindergarten teacher: too many of today's five year olds are starting school without the social, emotional, and academic foundations they need to thrive. At just the moment when their capacity for learning is greatest, most of them don't have access to quality pre-k programs.

We need to get back to basics of what is really important and that is our children. Invest in our children for the future.

Both of my daughters were in pre-k and both are on honor roll. they knew how to read very early. I think that this was wonderful for them. But I've noticed that its a very rare thing to find in small towns without costing an extreme amount of money. Both of my daughters were able to go for free on the Indian reservation near here before they started only accepting Indian children. Now my sister-in-law is having to pay for her child to go to pre-k because its not offered.

I believe that this is a highly responsible idea and choice. By providing a beneficial pre-education, we not only will be ensuring a more efficient educational program for America, but we will be molding better Americans. America is a place for people of all races to join and enmesh, but not all of them speak our common language. If we all can understand each other, we then can further simplify national communication. This choice benefits the present, but especially the future; it is best to handle future generations with extra care.

An educated, politcally active population is what keeps democracy from descending in to demogogary, which is what we have in government right now! Support Pre-K for all.

Kindergarden students are expected to know now what 1st and 2nd grade students were learning 20 years ago. Without the solid base that Pre-K builds we are setting up many children for failure.

I have ten grandchildren, the PRE-K Act, would help to ensure social skills that will stay with children the rest of there lives. It also helps teachers in all the grades that follow.
