Make Pre-k Available for Every Child

Target: Rep. George Miller, Chair, and Rep. Buck McKeon, Ranking Member, House Committee on Education and Labor
Sponsored by: Pre-K Now

For the first time in four years, the number of governors recommending increases in pre-k funding declined. With 22 states facing deficits, the economic downturn felt coast to coast threatens to halt years of positive momentum to make quality pre-k available to every three and four year old.

The Pre-K Act would change that by providing billions of dollars to support preschool programs nationwide. It would:

* reduce student-teacher ratios;
* recruit and retain qualified teachers with bachelor's degrees in early childhood education;
* address the cultural and linguistic needs of English Language Learners;
* provide full-day vs. half-day programs, and
* other activities that support program quality.

Preschool has proven to be highly beneficial to children, preparing them mentally and socially for their upcoming education. Quality preschool shouldn't be only available to the wealthy. Make it possible for every child -- sign the letter today.

I am writing to express my strong support for the PRE-K Act, introduced by Rep. Mazie Hirono, which would expand access to pre-k programs for our nation's four year olds. I urge you to move this bill to the top of your committee's agenda.

We have a narrow window of opportunity in each child's life when early education can set him or her on a trajectory for success. Delaying this legislation is denying millions of American children the chance to enter school ready and confident. Ask any Kindergarten teacher: too many of today's five year olds are starting school without the social, emotional, and academic foundations they need to thrive. At just the moment when their capacity for learning is greatest, most of them don't have access to quality pre-k programs.

Last year my grandaughter was in Pre-K.This year she starts to kindergarden.She willbe going in already knowing how to write her name,say her colors, count to 20, and most of all, her social skills are great. Kids NEED this time before they start to main streem into the school system! Please make sure our little ones at least have that chance?

I am a pre-K teachers aide and I see everyday how the children benifit from this. Too many children are being raised by single parents or from broken homes and they either don't have the time or just don't care and of course the one that suffers is THE CHILD. One of the greatest gifts we can give is education, children at this age are eager to learn. This needs to be done.

In the face of No Child Left Behind, too many of our nation's children ARE being left behind because they are not learning to read when they are emotionally & academically ready. As a Special Education Teacher, I can guarantee that by passing this into law & fully funding it, many children, who wouldn't have, would be able to become confident readers by the time they are in first grade. Additionally, many learning & behavioral problems will be averted by passing this legislation & fully funding it. Please do something pro-active for our nation's four year old children: support this legislation & work to fully fund the law. Then watch the No Child Left Behind testing of these 4 year old children as they advance through the grades; their test scores will increase. It will happen.

I think that the growing population of non-english speaking citizens has set back the education process in our schools. I think that children born in the United States are being held back because the classroom is having to give extra attention to the kids lacking english speaking skills.

The Pre-K years are THE prime window of opportunity for children to master basic reading and math skills, as well as fundamental emotional skills. It is essential to the future of all our children that they have access to pre-K.

Make this available to those who want this program but do NOT make it mandatory. BIG DIFFERENCE

Being a Kindergarten teacher I see the difference in the children who have attended pre-k and those who haven't. Pre-k sets children up for success. They are more prepared socially, emotionally and academically. I firmly believe all children should have access to a Pre-K education.

At the eighth grade level, many of my students are deficient in some of the most basic skills. Quality pre-K prgrams lay the foundation for students to build upon as they advance in their elementary and secondary education.

The only thing I don't like about this Act, which I believe should be amended, is the requirement for teachers to have a BA in early childhood education. I believe teachers should have a degree in a subject and a minor in education, otherwise they do not have a solid subject to teach. With children in pre-K programs, I think a major in education would be okay as long as they also had a minor in English. The quality of English spoken and written in this country, by its natives, is appalling, embarassing and destructive to America's economic growth, world standing and ability to develop its own technical and professional workforce rather than importing from other countries who teach their non-native English-speaking children better English than we teach our own.
