Tell Congress to Ban TV Drug Ads

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Consumers Union

A bill was just introduced in the House banning advertising of new drugs and devices for the first three years on the market. It also requires TV drug and device ads include a toll-free number, so we can easily report serious side effects to the FDA.

This bill will really improve the safety of prescription drugs. The first few years a drug is on the market is when harmful side effects are likely to emerge. Banning ad campaigns will keep a new drug from being overused until its risks are better known.

And telling us how to report serious side effects in TV ads will get important safety information to the FDA more quickly.

Tell your member of Congress to support this important bill now. The momentum is growing to do something about TV drug and device ads thanks to you!

Subject: Please support H.R. 6151

Dear [Decision Maker],

Please support legislation to help protect me from the risks of new drugs and medical devices.

I urge you to cosponsor and support H.R. 6151, The Responsibility in Drug and Device Advertising Act of 2008, a bill introduced by Representatives DeLauro and Emerson that would place a three-year moratorium on advertisements for new drugs and devices.

The first few years a drug or device is on the market is the period when previously unrecognized risks and side effects are likely to become known. A three-year moratorium on direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising for new drugs and devices will allow doctors to evaluate their use in patients, permit further safety evaluations and adverse event surveillance, and minimize any inappropriate overuse.

They weren't always on TV and people knew how to go see a Dr. and get medicine. The pharmaceutical market has inundated us all...it's madness and must be stopped. Watching these commercials leaves all of us thinking there must be something wrong with us...

The public is in no position to request drugs to be prescribed by physicians. This approach is totally backwards.

I support the H.R.6151 bill.I think when a new drug is made it should go into a trial study for 3 yrs. and then this data would give the Drs. and the public adequate time to assess the new drug.I highly believe in research and what can be found.Too many drugs prove to be dangerous at the patients cost, physically and financially.Sincerely,Kay DonohueR.N.

I have long been aware of how many drug ads we see in every TV show. Research has shown they influence people to demand these from their doctor, who are often willing to 'try'something if requested. This is wrong. The impetus should come from your doctor, who should not be influenced by TV ads. All these ads prove how much cash drug companies have which they are NOT spending on Research!

Stop All Misleading Drug Ads. The Drug Companies Pretend to be a panasea and their only interest is in profit at all cost. If they were into health they would educate and promote prevention. Secondly, all the LEGALIZED DRUG USE/ABUSE has a secondary side effect into the environment. Please help stop all this. Please be pro-active and take a stand and do what's morally right for the good of people and the environment. Nancy Bomgardner

Our society would hugely benefit from lessening its reliance upon doctors and healthcare. We should be advocating for prevention of disease via personal actions instead of simply throwing pills in people's faces and quieting them, only briefly until they have another "serious problem" according to the money-hungry medical industry.

The ads make it seem like it's a good thing and that all is safe when it is unknown. I want to know - Who lobbies for me - the people? The government should work for the people and not for the highest bidder.

Please ban "drug advertising". It is horrific, misleading, and leading our country into a world of greater addiction than ever before.

I have been the caregiver of my 91 year old mom for four years now due to my dad's death and her dementia. At first, we tried the newer drugs touted for memory and neurological enhancement, but the side effects were consistently intolerable. So please believe me when I tell you that my experience, as both a daughter and a marketing manager, dictates a need for a more prudent and cautious method of drug announcements/product launches. I would sincerely appreciate your consideration of this issue.

Not only is it filling our ears with negativity ( you're sick), but it is as if the public is being called to be guinea pigs at a high profit for the Drug companies.
