Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

I am a self employed small business owner and am unable to afford health care for my family. We do not have any insurance at this time, nor do I see a possibility of having in the near future. It is not fair we cannot go to the doctor and receive the care we need.

for all us citizens. Our taxes are used to create medicines but we still pay more than any other country. Nationalize health care and pharmacuetical companies. Also, legalize assisted suicide, expecially since many are homeless, helpless and hopeless thanks to our own government.

My daughter has ADHD. Medicaid will pay for me to put her on ritalin or some other highly addictive and dangerous amphetamine, but I can't get coverage to help me pay for food to put her on a resticted diet, or to see a psychologist and a family councelor at the same time. They will cover my husband and I in an emergancy, but not till whatever the problem is, is deemed an emergancy by them! What good is this doing? We don't have quality or choices! People who make a little more money than us have it worse! They pay their bill every month, thousands of dollars, then they have to pay a deductable on top of that, then their insurance runs out all together!!! Why even have insurance? Why are we letting them run things? If they were gone, you bet medical costs would come down! Lets do it now!

How come we have money to dump in other countries and we don't even have appropriate healthcare for our own people? ... This is not a third world country, so why do we have a worse than a third world country quality healthcare? Let's get our act together, this is ridiculous!

The DRG--Diagnosis Related Group system foisted upon us and quickly adopted by the health insurance industry has succeeded only in hastening the financial collapse of the American health care system. Costs have spiraled out of control and many citizens have already paid with their lives as a result. The government needs to initiate cost control limits on health care expenses as is done in Canada.
