Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

We're spending a good percentage of our income on health care, and we never use much of anything except to see a chiropractor once in a while. There should be deep discounts for people who are health and work hard to stay healthy. There should be a preventative medicine plan.

Being self employed is not all it is cracked up to be because of this issue. The costs keep increasing and the coverage is decreasing. After prolonged illness and death of my first husband, no health insurance and bankruptcy this is a hot button for me. The waste, corruption of the system and expensive pharmaceuticals is ridiculous.

I am stuck in medicaid hell. I am working but if i work just a few hours too many I am not covered then I can literally die as my medications and treatments literally sustain my life. I cannot be without health insurance but i feel trapped.

It is a sad day when senior citizens can't afford basic health care. They have worked and saved their whole lives to be reduced to choosing between eating a meal or buying their medications. That is totally unacceptable! Darcy Segobia Melaleuca The Wellness Company alohamelaleuca.com

The is no reason for the high cost of health care, but greed. The greed of the insurance and drug companies. Get the insurance companies out of my examining room where only my doctor and I should be present.

I am Italian and I can witness that there is no solution except free healt care for every citizen. Health care can not be handled as a common busines, its a human right (expecially in rich countries). In Italy, in spite of horrible, corrupted governments, national health care is not bad and above all: NOBODY IS LEFT BEHIND!

Why can't we be selfless with health care?There are so many things we have to worry about financially as Americans, one major thing being the terrible decline of the economy which is leading us to higher prices for everything. Since we are dealing with that, how about you take a load off and give free health care? It'd be greatly appreciated.

It's time that we reward people who take the time and responsibility to lead a healthy lifestyle. As a Doctor that focuses on holistic healthcare and prevention, it's frustrating when an insurance company dictates what treatment is covered.

I also believe health insurance should cover alternative medicine and Chinese Medicine, both proven to be much more effective than Western drugs, and less expensive, with few to no side effects.

I currently have no insurance and suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis. I cannot afford all of the health care that I so desperately need. Something needs to be done in this country for all of those who need quality health care but cannot afford it. We are one of the most powerful nations in the world but yet our people suffer because of lack of health care. Its an outrage!
