Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

The cost for health insurance is outrageous! They need to make medical Insurance affordable to everyone. It's true if you don't have insurance you are treated horriable by the doctors and hospitals. Some insurance dictates to doctors of what test can be given and what can't. This needs to Stop!!

This issue is something americans should not have to deal with. It is disgusting that this country has put healthcare on the back burner for so long. We need to change our priorities!

We all deserve the same medical at a low cost. The doctors and hospitals charge way to much. If the government would step in and put a cap on what can be charged then everyone could afford it. My hospital charged medicare $10.00 for an asprin. I could have bought a bottle of 1000 and still have money left over

As a cancer survivor it is even more important to me than it was before to have high quality, low cost health care. Everyone should have access to the kind of care I have received during my bout with cancer.

I believe that ALL people, rich or poor deserve higher-quality, lower cost health care. We are all the same, human beings, and we all deserve to be treated the same and given the same health treatment.

I am on SS disability and so is my husband.Being on a fixed income makes it difficult to get medication and health care without fear of losing their homes.I've lost my house and my life savings.I can't afford dental,even though I am told I need dental care by my family physician.I have a choice eat or have the proper amount of health insurance.I am physically unable to work and my husband is legally blind due to a detached retina in his right eye.The other is completely blind from birth.DON'T LET US FALL BETWEEN THE CRACKS!

I for one think that we are crippling the workforce of America by not offering high enough quality health care. By failing to meet the needs of Americans, we are failing to let Americans meet the needs of the nation.

I have a diease and have been sick for many years, I have also been very mistreated by the medical field. I dont have medical insurance and they continue to do the minimum for me.They just treat the symptons and can care less about my rare diease. The health care in this country is the pits. Thank-You

As a disabled person, this is very important to me. I used to be self-sufficient and can barely pay my bills now with the medical and prescription costs so high.

I've been under medical care in 4 different countries and I'm not impressed with the quality of healthcare in the United States. The only thing I find astounding about American healthcare is its cost.

I think the cost of Medicare should be lowered. The cost keeps going up and yet we do not get any breaks on our medicine. We need to pay for a secondary insurance, leaving us barely enough money to live on, or going without the medicines we need.

I am a single Mom and I can't afford health care! My sister has Ovarian cancer and medical costs for treatment are too high! Money talks when it comes to health care! SAD! It's all a political game for Dr.'s , Health Care Corporations, and politicians!.

I was sick and subjected to inhuman, medival testing. I was treated like I was garbage. I almost died and no one could figure out what was wrong because I couldn't afford to have better testing. Plus, I was on waiting list while becoming worse. When you're poor, no one cares. Money talks. Then, my fiancee took a lot of money out of his savings to send me to decent doctors for modern testing. It took them less than a day to figure out what was wrong with me. Two years of agony were over in less than a day! I think this says it all. There is no reason that if you're poor or don't have insurance that you shouldn't have the right to have the best testing and treatment to save your life. Even if you have insurance, you still have to pay out of pocket for a lot of the more accurate and humane testing. I have insurance now, but as I see it, I pay over $200.00 a month to be treated somewhat like I'm a person when visiting a hospital or doctor. I still have to pay out of pocket for better testing. I had a test done recently that all women should have. It cost me almost $600.00. Almost none of the insurance companies cover it. Things need to change before a lot more people die.
