Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

Our current health caes system is a big mess in cost and delivery from the profiteering of the industry itself, especially the insurance moguls. We are somewhere below most of Europe for overall cost and longevity of life. Much of Europe has a mixture or social health care which they actually love more then anything no matter what lies are purpotrted by our drug and insurance industries.

IN ORDER TO DO ANYTHING TOWARDS PROVIDING FAIR, AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE FOR AMERICANS, WE HAVE TO BREAK THE STRANGLEHOLD OF THE INSURANCE AND DRUG COMPANIES, AND THE ENTITIES THAT OWN/RUN HOSPITALS AND CLINICS, AND THE MEDICAL PROFESSIONS, ON ANY AND ALL DECISIONS THAT WOULD MAKE THINGS BETTER FOR AMERICANS AND THEIR CHILDREN. AMERICANS NEED TO KNOW WHO THEIR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES ARE RECEIVING DONATIONS FROM. IF SOME ARE FROM ANY SECTION OF THE HEALTH-CARE "INDUSTRY" IS THAT SENATOR OR EPRESENTATIVE FREE TO ACT IN THE BEST INERESTS OF THE PEOPLE WHO PAY THEIR SALARIES, THE TAX-PAYING VOTERS OF THIS COUNTRY? I HARDLY THINK SO. THE MOTTO A DOCTOR PLEDGES TO UPHOLD WHEN S/HE QUALIFIES IS "FIRST DO NO HARM!" ALL OF THE FORCES ARRAYED AGAINST PATIENTS DO UNTOLD HARM AND DAMAGE TO HARD-WORKING AMERICANS AND THEIR FAMILIES. THIS HAS TO END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMERICANS HAVE TO STOP BEING MANIPULATED AND SPOOKED BY UNFAIR AND UNTRUE ADVERTISEMENTS THAT CHARACTERIZE A FAIR, EQUITABLE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM AS "SOCIALISM." THIS IS NONSENSE. AMERICA, THE STRONGEST NATION ON EARTH, SHOULD BE ASHAMED THAT IT CANNOT, OR RATHER, WILL NOT TAKE CARE OF ITS ILL AND AILING CITIZENS, STRICTLY BECAUSE, TO DO SO, WOULD GET IN THE WAY OF THE BIG-MONEY INTERESTS THAT REAP UNCONSCIONABLE PROFITS WHILE HARD-WORKING JOES AND JANES LOSE THEIR HARD-EARNED HOMES BECAUSE SOME UNSCRUPULOUR INSURANCE COMPANY REFUSES/REFUSES TO PAY FOR VITAL HEALTH PROCEDURES. THIS IS CRIMINAL AND GREEDY. IS THIS THE AMERICAN WAY??????????

I have a chronic health condition -- however, with quality consistent health care, I can continue to be a productive contributing member of society with a high-functioning job; if I lose that medication/health care, I can no longer function at that job and must go on goverment-funded disability.

I am both a parent and a PT, and concerned re the direction profit-driven companies are taking us. Let's put the care back in Healthcare! and clear the way for real conversation and solutions, especially prevention-oriented medicine, devoid of bottom-line constraints.

Our health care system is broken. We need a solution: single payer universal health care system

Healthcare should be available to everyone, just as the Police, the Fire Dept. and the schools are. It's time for a single payer insurance now. As a nurse I see how awful, wasteful and ineffective coporate- for- profit health insurance is and how our lousy health care system actually makes people sick- actuallly kills people. Health care is a right.

If the UK could impliment a national health care system, after a horrible war - and since 1948 be taking care of their citizens...why can't we? If it wasn't working they wouldn't still do it. Plus we are the ONLY industrial country that DOESN'T offer universal health care! And we pay more than anyone for the crappy care that we get. This needs to be fixed! Stop wasting money on a war that KILLS and start putting it into SAVING lives and getting out country healthy again.

Universal healthcare and the concept of socialized medicine is working for Canada, Great Britain, Germany, and Switzerland. Why can't it work for us? Support Universal healthcare now. There's no excuse for this national abuse.

We MUST have single payer universal health care in this country. My daughter, a single mom, must choose between paying health insurance premiums and buying food and shelter for her family. My grandson, a youth pastor with health insurance, had to take a part time job to pay for his wife's gall bladder surgery. These are middle class professional young people -- for those who do not have their advantages, it is much worse.
