Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

I hope that you American citizens can realize that other western democracies see universal health care, universal education, and other common needs as a function of their democratic government. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, France (and even Cuba) have more health care available to their citizens through public systems than you do. I can not understand why you peopel do not stand up for your right to have your taxes serve you and your needs (rather than wars against others)... I was amazed to learn that you "bought" the idea that universal PUBLIC health care is a socialist (and that socialism is communism) notion. NO It is a DEMOCRATIC notion. Glad I live in a caring country that looks after its citizens.

Health insurance in this country is a joke. The only premium I can afford is through BC and is for a $3500 annual deductible. I pay 100% of everything until I reach that deductible. My monthly premiums literally go down the toilet. And my plan does not even cover a mammogram. But if hypothetically I was not insured but had a screening and hypothetically had cancer you can be sure that no one would insure me. In addition to all that bureaucracy, no one is straightforward with the costs. The last radiology dept I called (3 weeks ago) to obtain a quote for a mammogram under my insurance plan has yet to return my phone calls. You say the magic words "insurance" "quote" "coverage" and both the doctors and the insurance reps don't commit to anything. Yep, things need to change.

My health care is as expensive as my rent payment. I don't know how much longer I can afford it however, if I lose it I will not be able to get another individual policy.
