Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

Most Americans are just one car accident away from personal bankruptcy. The way our national health care and insurance system is set up, we are all living on financial thin ice.

We should all focus on lower health care cost. Money goes to other things not as important as health cost.

First of all, health care should not be a "for profit" industry. When you are sick, you have no choice, you have to seek medical care. Second, all other "industries" are expected to give you an estimate before they begin any work. Not so with health care. You get the nasty shock when it's all over, and no choice about paying it. Quality health care should be everyone's right, not just something for the wealthy.

I work in healthcare and each year the cost of insurance and prescriptions go up and it seems less is covered. My family all has health issues and we should go to the doctor more often, but don't due to cost.

At a time when the cost of everything is rising but pay checks are not, we need to be able to afford health care. Too many people are not getting the care they need because they can no longer afford to do so.

All Americans ought to have health insurance. Our system is full of waste that makes costs too high. What we need is a system that provides quality affordable health care to all. What we have leaves way too many without health insurance and encourages the existence of a bureaucracy that is in place to ensure industry profits by trying to avoid paying claims.

Our country's priorities are completely out of whack, while I am fortunate to have health insurance, my personal contribution keeps increasing at an obscene rate combined with higher deductables and higher co-pays while we waste trillions of $s to interfer in a civil war that we have no business involved with at all.....

The insurance companies are forcing medical professionals to cut costs and prescribe certain drugs when others would be better. Let the doctors do what they are trained to do and keep the healthcare companies out of it.

I don't want my Mom's HMO telling her what medications she can and cannot take. Blue Cross refuses to pay for prescriptions she needs to have. It's sickening.

All other industrial nations have universal health care as a human right, and it works just fine. The U.S. government is backward on responding to the basic needs of Americans.

It is a shame the way that health care is administered in the USA. It is costing us money and personal dignity forcing us to take jobs that we don't want just to remain somewhat healthy.

Hello: Because of the high cost of insurance and health care and the unfortunate situation of being in multiple accidents mostly all of my discretionary income is spent on health care. This robs me of the ability to save for retirement or to have other needs of mine taken care of. It is a shame that in this country one can work hard, be a good citizen, help others, but cannot have affordable health care. Others I know forego getting care because of this. Politicians are afforded free health insurance and other perks, why not really try to work to give your constituents the same?

If other countries have better coverage for less cost, this great country should AT LEAST be IN LINE with that.

It is appalling that we live in the ONLY Western country where health care is a matter of income rather than a basic human right.
