Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

I am 75 years old and I deserve good health care the same as anyone younger. My life is good except for the fear that if I become ill, I may not be able to have good health care. I have worked hard all my life and have always paid for health insurance. However, with the prices of health care and drugs soaring-it is scary

A lot of other countries have health care for everyone that their people don't have to pay for. Even poorer countries have this. America has become a country of profit, where it's the survival of the richest. Americans need to work together as a country. I don't see that happening with other people taking advantage of their fellow Americans.

I am unemployed, pay over $500.00 a month for COBRA insurance and am just about broke. I need medications and to be under a doctor's care. I don't know what I am going to do when I have to cancel in a couple of months. I need low-cost quality healthcare as do millions of other Americans.

I'm disabled and on Medicaid and Medicare. I know how high the cost of health care is. How hard it is to get approval for treatment and medications to help my condition.It was even worse when I had regular insurance.

I graduated from college in 2004 and since then have had healthcare for 1 year. I think it is depressing to pay over 20 thousand dollars a year for an education that is bearly able to get my bills paid let alone pay for health insurance. I don't think companys should have the choice to offer employees health benefits. Every person with a job should be given the choice to buy into the companys plan. I have yet to meet a manager or CEO who didn't have health benefits through the company! The government needs to step in and make school and health insurance more manageable! It is out of control!

We must get quality health care in this country that is affordable to all Americans. This must be a priority for the new administration.

Here in America so many people go without basic health care! This is hurting our Nation in many ways to include decreasing the number of able bodied workers. It is imperative that we the greatest Nation on Earth take care of our own citizens. Thank you for your time.
