Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

We should be headed toward Universal Health Care with the elimination of insurance companies. They are the roadblock between getting health care and health care providers. Also, the practice of pharmaceuticals giving under the table gifts to providers has to be eliminated. That practice biases doctors to use the gift givers products.

Higher quality health care and lower costs are important to all Americans, to ensure that we all have the opportunity to enjoy long quality lives. It is appalling that we spend more on health care than other nations and yet have lower life expectancies!

working in the medical field for most of my life, and watching my husband go to his grave for almost 19 years, I have learned a lot. I wish you could set up a committee to watch Medicare. They are the dictators for all other Insurances. If a Dr. does not want that he simply doesn't accept Medicare. Either way we the people suffer. Why do they make a person with a suspicious head wound go through an xray, when they know full well it will need a cat scan, Why do they refuse MRI's for Breast conditions, when most of the time the mammograms are inconclusive, as was mine for four years, I finally had the MRI only to have a radical, even 35 lymph nodes, this is wrong. I could have died waiting for the MRI. Please, Please,Please, make someone responsible for the hospitals and the Insurance companies actions. It will cost less in the long run. thank you. Sincerely, Helene Johnson

We feel like a third world country, where health care is not a right, but a priviledge.

As Americans we should be able to establish a system of mental and physical health care that does not leave virtually 90% of the population fearing sickness and old age due to our inept, unfair system. Please work to get a new network of health care providers that serve everyone, everywhere across the country-fairly and equitably.

Health care is this country is so badly in need of improvement. We've lost "caring" to a "big business" system.

Socialism works, nurses are the workers to capacitize, take away the profit, empower the patients with clear information about science and its analysis of environment and health.

I feel american consumers arejust now getting the gist of our run away health care cost as more and more of us are becoming uninsured. This is unexceptable!!! Everyone must work together to bring cost down,teach people to live healthier life styles, and ensure healthcare for all.

I am very sick and can't afford medication that might help me live longer. If you are low income and have a poor insurance that won't pay for higher costs medications, you die.
