Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

One basic right of every American is the right to access quality health care. For millions of Americans that right is either slipping away or has ceased to exist altogether. This simply should not be. No American should have to choose between eating and purchasing life sustaining medications. And no one should have to live in fear of losing his or home because of devasting illness.

My husband and I are self employed, so we have to find our own health insurance. This means that cannot get group coverage. Instead, the insurance company can charge us based on what they believe that we will need, rather than on what the entire group needs. We use very little health care, and the insurance companies don't pay for preventive care, so they don't pay out anything for us. All of our premiums go to their profit. Although we are overweight, we are in excellent health, so our premiums are far higher than what they should be and would be if we had access to group rates. All families should have access to group insurance with automatic coverage, regardless of employment choices.

Universal, single-payor health coverage must be given high priority.

We need a health care system in which everyone pays in -- similar to the way every driver is required to purchase car insurance in TX. But, it needs to be based on a sliding scale - a contribution or Tax which is based directly on IRS data. The wealthier among us need to pay more & the poor among us must pay something if only a minimal deductible amount. -- very similar to a church Tithe -- reasonable members of churches do not complain about the church tithe & members of our Nation should not feel comfortable complaining about our nation's tax. If you believe in your church you pay the tithe or find a way to serve. If you believe in our country - you will pay your taxes or find a way to serve if you can do nothing else- if you don't help our nation you are contributing to the failure of our nation.

As a seniorsenior of 88 I need health care coverage and so do my daughters who are in their sixties and my granddaughter who is in her thirties. Every other advanced country has it universally and as a single payer and it's cheaper than here.

Insurance companies, large coprorations, and the government (medicare/ medicaid) "negotiate" artificially low prices with doctors and hospitals - and those who have to pay privately get stuck paying 4 or more times as much! It is extremely difficult and very expensive to get insurance if you are not covered through an employer, but fewer employers are offering coverage! This needs to change.

Physicians are leaving the practice of medicine every day because they cannot afford their own malpractice and other insurance costs and and are unable to practice medicine the way it should be done. Why? Because big government and lobbying on behalf of insurance companies is driving doctors away, increasing the cost of health care to the consumer and making it prohibitive for many Americans. I know from experience that many physicians are unhappy with the way the insurance and pharmaceutical companies are running the physicians' professional lives and the lives of their patients. It is time the American consumer stands up and says "Enough." We can and will make health care and the practice of preventive medicine available to every single man, woman and child in the United States. There's plenty of money--take it away from the pharmaceutical and insurance lobbies and we'll be budgeted for years to come. Get a Democrat in office and hold him/her ACCOUNTABLE for all campaign promises made, especially with respect to solving the very solvable problem of health care in this country. It's not rocket science--it's ethical thinking, which is becoming more of a rarity in the United States than products made in America (and that's rare).

The cost of healthcare in this country is simply ridiculous. Too many of us cannot afford quality healthcare because the costs are so high. Practices take full advantage of consumers and they are making so much money off of the people needing their services.

We need better healthcare, and take money from the huge DOD budget and put it in healthcare. Lets take care of the US citizens now, and not get so involved in world affairs. Lets heal the US name.
