Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

“We now face an opportunity — and an obligation — to turn the page on the failed politics of yesterday's health care debates… My plan begins by covering every American. If you already have health insurance, the only thing that will change for you under this plan is the amount of money you will spend on premiums. That will be less. If you are one of the 45 million Americans who don't have health insurance, you will have it after this plan becomes law. No one will be turned away because of a preexisting condition or illness.” — Barack Obama, Speech in Iowa City, IA, May 29, 2007 This is why we need Barack for President! www.barackobama.com/issues/healthcare

I'm sick of insurance companies' claim that universal health care is less cost effective. If you think about the long-term, it is more cost effective to take preventative measures with regards to health care, and to make that service accessible to everyone.

It is appalling that a country which prides itself in supporting the civil rights of people worldwide, doesn't support their own civilians when it comes to their health & well-being. Stop & look at the money being poured into an unwanted war for just one day & think about the difference it would make if applied to a startup program for health care nationally. Shame on all our leaders for letting this happen, & shame on them even more if they let it continue. I lived in Canada where health care was provided - if they can do it, the US can too - no excuses!

Take action immediately before all the baby boomers who have been paying taxes for 40 + years need assistance. I love the comment by the british nurse.

There's tons of news stories out there as to how the health care system in the United States is failing, from the widening health-care-gap between rich and poor, to people who lose everything due to an illness.

I am on 6 medications now that I will have to take the rest of my life. I am very tired of the insurance companies attempting to tell me who to go to for medical care & trying to also get involved trying to tell me what treatments I do or do not need. It's all about money to the insurance companies. They are not concerned with the well being of the patient & then the doctors that will accept the insurance have to be willing to accept less than what is normally billed for their services. We pay high insurance rates and still have to cover a portion of the medical treatments. It's a shame that money or the lack of money & the insurance companies control the level of care that we receive.

If everyone had reasonable access to quality health care, there would be so many financial and other benefits. It is frustrating to see people making large life decisions based only on how they can get adequate health insurance.

It is outrageous that this country can't give ailing people decent care at an affordable price. AND that you never even know what the cost will be until it's too late. Why can Canada, England, France, and other countries care for their sick and also help with preventative medicine, but we can't? It's time to stop gouging the American public.
