Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

Because I work 7 days a week and cannot afford insurance or pay out of pocket to see a doctor. Do you think we need help? Anyone who has a brain out there?

As a registered nurse and public health nurse, I see people, including children, forgoing needed care regularly, getting far sicker than they would have, and costing our society far more than they would have. This includes mental health. All over the world there are examples of countries delivering far greater care while spending far less. The state of healthcare here is absolutely demoralizing. If you can deliver the kind of care we deserve, (and you can!), you will earn the respect you need to be elected.

WAKE UP - OUR GOVERNMENT HELPS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND IS WASTING BILLIONS ON THE IRAQ WAR WHILE WE ARE LEFT WANTING OUR BASIC NECESSITIES!!!! SHAME ON OUR GOVERNMENT!!!!

In addition to health care in the US being overpriced it is no longer reliable. Profit has overruled logic to the point that the system resembles the mafia sterotype more than morality or science.

the only people i know who are happy with their healthcare are the ultra rich--ironically the ones who would be able to pay for a change in health if it were to occur.

I can't afford health insurance, even through my work place. I suffer from things that medications (if I had access to them) could help me in so many positive ways. Unfortunately, every insurance plan has the pre-existing conditions clause, which makes it a waste of money for me to carry the insurance, and ups my costs for health care. In my case, it is a lose-lose situation.

My husband & I are self-employed and our income has not always been consistent. We don't have medical coverage. We don't see an MD on a regular basis becasue we don't have health care. We've had to use the ER as our medical care a number of times. Other countries take care of their people better than our country does. Please help all Americans have qualtiy, affordable care. I urge you to spend more on PREVENTION & look into alternative and more natural ways of keeping this nation strong & healthy.

no one can afford proper care the way the system is!! I'm from Canada where healthcare is paid for by taxes, not funding wars.

Adequate health care should not be dependent upon ones income. Above and beyond that, insurance companies rather than our physicians seem to determine the care we get, the length of hospital stay, etc. This needs to be changed!!

We have a life expectancy and infant mortality rate worse than all of those places with the "socialized medicine" we are taught to fear by the media and advertising from those with the most $$ to gain. It's time we put the focus on quality and accessible health care, where prevention of illness rather than preventing a vi$it to the doctor is most important.

If we believe in universal, free, mandatory, tax-supported, quality education, why not health care? Do we provide education for those who can't pay only on a charity, emergency basis? Do we care so much less about health care than about education? How much does education accomplish for those who can't pay for major illnesses like cancer?

Living in America, there is no reason as far as I am concerned that we all should not have access to affordable, high quality health care.
