Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

The AMA has been a top lobbyist for far too long. Their greed has blinded them to the Hippocratic Oath and their purpose to serve humanity. People are not disposable equipment to be used in factories, refineries, and chemical plants like some old piece of mechanical equipment.

Something must be done to ensure affordable and available health care for all. This is one of the biggest crisis our country is facing. We are far behind other countries and health care should be a right, not something only for the wealthy.

It's health CARE that's important - not health INSURANCE!! A very close friend of mine has health insurance that won't pay for a very necessary proceedure because it's "too expensive!" So I guess it's OK to let her suffer? This is AMERICA and it's the 21st century!! We can and SHOULD do better for our citizens!

We are a sick nation in general compared to other health conscious countries. HMOs are destroying the quality of care we as Americans are receiving. Drug companies are using us as guinea pigs. Most importantly, sick people get into debt and have to resort to filing bankruptcy just to pay the ever rising cost of medical bills. With rises in our population, increasing technologies that damage our health (cellphones) and working indoors where germs can spread and breed, it is easy to fall prey to disease and debt which is a direct result of disease. All of these scenarios combined can make you even sicker. A sick person needs a break from financial worry and competent medical doctors to oversee their care, in order to get well. Europe is a fine example of such a program. I personally am for government healthcare for all Americans. Don't worry doctors and nurses you will still be able to make a good living. I herewith cast my vote for higher quality health care at a lower cost for all Americans. If we all vote for Barak Obama this can be achieved. Thank you.

Corporate greed has gone far enough in eroding the economic structure of this country.

Being one of the many Americans that has a chronic health condition, it's frustrating to continually have to spend more and more to treat the same issue. We work hard, we pay our taxes, but our happiness is limited by our health and if people can't afford adequate health care they shouldn't have to suffer.

The only way to provide quality health care for all Americans is through the ELIMNATION of private insurance companies in a SINGLE-PAYER system-as exists in EVERY OTHER industrialized nation. Our system is a national disgrace and it has got to change.
